The coal mining areas of Eastern KY still have a substantial Black population from people moving there from the Deep South. The small town where my dad grew up is 30% Black. I've been to Pikeville several times and it's not 100% like the stereotypes and I really don't think racism is worse than in big cities because people know each other on a personal basis. There is a certain percent of the population everywhere that has backward views on mixed race couples but generally the worst you'll get is a dirty look.

You might get a dirty look or a rude comment sometimes, but Pikeville is an isolated area. I'd be more worried about what living and working in Pikeville would do to my career than whatever the locals do or say.

Census hit the nail on the head..

I read an article about a folk musician from Knott county Kentucky, just sw of Pikeville, maybe 30 miles? Anyways he talked about how the racial prejudices that existed in other areas, per say in the deep south or other areas didn't exits in eastern Kentucky when he was growing up. They all worked, mingled and even intermarried together. Mix race people in eastern Kentucky were called "melungeons" you ought to look it up it's a very interesting read.

He said they all worked together, hunted, went to church together....alot of blacks sought refuge in remote parts of eastern Kentucky because of this. My cousins husband is african american and he's from Middlesboro in Bell county in SE Kentucky and my western Kentucky family, as southern and as country as they come don't seem to have any issues with him at all, nothing racial at all

Now, bad apples are everywhere and you should know that...
