Hello All!
My fiancé and I are traveling to Kentucky this July, and renting a house in La Grange for a week. We are hoping to determine the area where we would like to relocate next Spring. We will be leasing for a few years before we decide to buy a home, so we can properly check out the area.
We are looking for a rural area within an hours drive to a more suburban area for business purposes (farm products and gun smithing/firearms, respectively). We are hoping to find a good amount of land (30-100 acres) wherever we finally settle.
Armed with this information, we are looking for suggestions as to which areas we should check out while on vacation. Any special eateries to check out, or other attractions that will give us an idea of the area.
We appreciate any and all feedback!

LaGrange is a good place to start the search! But if I may ask, what would your budget be? There are MANY areas that could fit your needs.
Just to name a few in KY
LaGrange/Buckner
Crestwood/Pewee Valley
Anchorage
Mount Washington
Hillview
Prospect/Goshen (very pricey though)
Southern Indiana is also a great option (more bang for your buck)-
Sellersburg
Memphis
Charlestown
Floyds Knobs
Lanesville
Corydon

Also, are you just limiting the search to the northern Kentucky area? There are 120 counties in the state, with land to build. You might want to look around the western Kentucky area, Bowling Green (3rd largest city in Ky),Owensboro (4th largest), Hopkinsville (9th) and Paducah. If you locate near the Kentucky Lake/Lake Barkley area in W. Ky. you'll find good land, plus you're within an hour or less drive of Paducah, Hopkinsville, Bowling Green, and an hour or a little more to Nashville, Tn. I-24 travels east to west going from Chattanooga, Tn to near Marion, Ill. making it an easy drive to Atlanta and St. Louis. I-69 which will run, when completed in all states, from southern Texas to Michigan.

Those areas in Southern Indiana I listed are literall anywhere from 10-30 minutes from Louisville, so you would still be very close to a big city.
If Kentucky in general is your interests, there are TOOOOOONS of places you could consider

Kentucky is principally where we have been looking. It is difficult to narrow down an area when there are so many beautiful places in Kentucky! Almost anywhere will suit our needs. So I suppose we will ultimately decide based on which property suits us best.

No, we are not limiting ourselves to the Louisville area. In fact, we are only staying in that area because we found a vacation rental there, and decided it gave us a good starting point to see some places in the rest of the state.

While you're in Kentucky, be sure to sample a Hot Brown (available in many good restaurants), Ale-8-One (local soft drink, also widely available within Kentucky and nearby), and Derby Pie or a reasonable facsimile. If you can, also check out spoonbread, Bibb lettuce, and if you're really daring - lamb fries.
The Bourbon (distillery) Trail may also interest you. Plus, this is a great time to try local produce from Kentucky's many farmers' market.
Locals will know more specific restaurants in the LaGrange area - there is a nice coffee, tea and hot chocolate shop on Main Street, across from the wonderful toy shop.
