Can any residents of E-town or those living in close proximity of E-Town speak to the severity and frequency of tornadoes? We are considering a move there in approximately 5 years and this is the one aspect that makes us a little weary. What are the best websites for monitoring and viewing historical data for frequency and intensity. Also and more importantly, if you have lived through one in the E-town area please describe how you prepare for them.

NOAA has a great site for checking historical weather:

http://www4.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-win/wwcgi.dll?wwEvent~Storms (broken link)

put in the state and county (Hardin), and you'll see that the county has recorded 15 tornadoes since 1964.

Wayne has given you great info for stats!

I live just north of E-town, and I can tell you we do get the usual spring storms - some may be severe - but it is nothing like what you would find in Tornado alley of the plains or around the Ohio/Indiana area.

Tornadoes - after living in this area for 40 years - are the one thing I really do not worry about - but like anywhere else - there is always a possibility of anything - but as a general rule - no biggie. I have not read the stats - but remembering the past 5 years or so, we will get one or two storms with gusting winds, a few branches/trees down - occassional hail and buckets of rain. I have found the majority of sever weather - tornadic activity to occur in the area of eastern Jefferson County into Oldham, as it comes across the river from Indiana.

This is a great time of year to come and visit - as you can get a feel for our springtime. It varies year to year - sometimes 80 degrees in March and April - but I have also seen snow on Derby Day (1st Saturday in May).

http://www.elizabethtownky.org/ this is a great site to get you started with basic info.

Hope to see you soon, and I hope this info is helpful.

Default Thanks for the info!

Hi Toria & Kimmieky,

Thanks for the website resources and personal perspective for tornadoes & E-Town. We are coming out the first week of April to visit our friends in E-Town and hope to experience the spring weather (we were out last August) this time! Best Regards,

Wayne & Robin

Great! You will be welcomed with open arms - that's for sure! Have fun - and make sure to hit the antique malls around - if that's your thing. Have your friends drive you over to Bardstown and up to Radcliff - some of the best 'junking' areas around.

Have fun! Kimmiey
