The cottonmouths in Western Kentucky are poisionous, but the water snakes people call cottonmouths in southcentral Kentucky are not. Some people think they are but if you look at the website I referenced it shows the posionous vaiety in the Western counties only.

We had a man who works for the Land between the lakes nature center bring a cottonmouth to the zoo for sugery last year, and he verified that the only place those snakes are found (so far) is in the Land between the lakes area

He needs to give me a call I can show him several sloughs and swamps over here in glorious Western Kentucky that has cottonmouths... I wouldn't bring them in for surgery I end their suffering... I had a big fat Copperhead on the garage step a few days ago. It was a pretty thing but to close to the house he had to go.

I only kill poisonous snakes for the safety of the kids and pets all others are welcome and ay-ok with me.

That's what I was told, that they are only there but that doesn't mean that's true... I imagine the snakes find their way around there somehow lol

Here's a range map that proves you are right Davart:

I hate snakes too...so much that I refuse to move to Florida to live near my family. I live in Madisonville and have only seen a couple of snakes since we moved here a little over 3yrs ago. The only poisonous one we saw was near the lake at the Audobon Park in Henderson. I'm not an expert...but I think you'll be relatively safe from snakes here.

I spent a few years living in Murray and never saw a snake. Of course I didn't go out in the woods and stuff.

But I have heard people saying there are water moccasins or something like that in western KY. Some of my relatives said they had a copperhead in their yard once.
