Is it because one political party brings it up, so the other party must disagree automatically? I just don't get how a state that is a leader in growing death plants (tobacco) and gambling through horse racing is all of a sudden against slot machines because that would be "immoral"??? I really and truly do not want my taxes raised. I am already mad because I just flushed money down the john through our car tax. Wake up people. They will get the money one way or another.
We're in the bible belt! That's the biggest part right there. I used to live in Union County where we could go to either the casino riverboat in Metropolis, Ill or Evansville, In (always did better in Metropolis. lol) and there were plenty of Kentucky license plate in the parking lot. I think it would be a boost for the state. Not sure if it will be as big a boost as Beshear thinks but it would help.
Who knows why - you can't claim 'because of the bible belt' and then have all the scratch-offs, lottery picks, etc. It's the same result = more people lose money than make money. The amount collected by the lottery is going down too - which doesn't help the budget situation. Most recently, the amount has dropped $6.8 million from last year. You can only keep reducing the state's operating budget so far without laying off state workers . If each agency keeps getting reduced operating funds, they soon will only be able to sit around their offices. This isn't a ding on state workers, most overtime has been stopped and comp. time is the only their 'payment'.

I never will understand the conflicting sides of KY. Some of the biggest and most identifiable industries in the state are tabacco, bourbon and horse racing. Also, KY is also one of the leading producers of marijuana. I've read some places that KY is only second to CA. Yet, there are lots of dry counties (some of which produce bourbon ), gambling (other than betting on horses) is illegal, and it is considered the "bible belt" by some.
I don't know what the problem is, but it does'nt stop it. All it does is send the tax money to IL or IN. That's a lot of money that kentucky could put to good use. When I went toIL, most of the lic. plates were from KY.
If a casino is in Indiana, 50 or 100 miles from one's place of residence, one makes fewer trips to the casino than if that den of iniquity were right around the corner, and fewer social ills result.
I remember Steve Beshear campaigning for governor with a "let the people vote" on casionos platform. Now he's realized the people are against him, and he's running scared. When Greg Stumbo couldn't get his unconstitutional proposal slid through the senate, Beshear responded by creating a budget crisis and claiming slots as the only possible solution. The man reminds me of a bully on the playground - when he can't get his way, he throws a tantrum and causes grief for everybody else.
I don't see what's wrong with making it legal... same with marijuana... I'd never do either, but as long as no one else forces me to, I really don't care if they do it or not.

Bourbon, tobacco and horse racing is tradition where gambling isn't. We don't like change much here.
The problem with casino gambling is the proponents tout all the benefits one will see from the revenues.
Has Mississippi's schools gotten that much better ?
( that was where much of the casino revenue was supposed to go )
