My Wife, Daughter (16) and I are planning on relocating to the Johnson City area, we are from Montana, and like the warmer weather and mountains. We are a little tired of 40 below!

My only question is, the crime rate seems high compared to the national average?

Any insight would be great, we are actually looking at the outskirts of JC, maybe Butler or Greenville?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes this question comes up fairly regularly....First, crime rates are computed by arrest records, except for about 8-10 crimes which are counted every time a crime is reported (even if arrest is not made). If a particular police department does a good job of solving crimes and making an arrest, this causes their crime rate to be higher than other departments which do not "clear" as many crimes with an arrest. So while our crime rate may be higher than some areas, it may also be that our police department is doing a better job than normal.....

Most of the crime that takes place in the tri cities is in very isolated pockets of the various cities. If you do not live in those isolated areas, you should be fine. By isolated, I do not mean "sides of town", but rather small pockets of just a few streets each.

Aside from the crime discussion, while Butler might seem to be on the outskirts of JC, it is a bit farther than it seems on the map. Not saying its a bad place, just a little more rural than you might realize just by looking at maps.

Greeneville is quite safe, just know where not to live... Butler is way out in the sticks, unless you're a meth cooker you'll be fine.

These two places are VERY different, though. Have you thought about exactly what you're looking for?

I assume you will visit Tennessee before moving? The South East is a different world than Montana, in both negative and positive ways, depending on what you are looking for.

Gray and Boones Creek are excellent places to live, both are situated close to Johnson City.
Lower crime and more country there = )

We are looking for a more quiet place, warmer weather is the key!
We do a lot of bicycling, hiking, golfing, hiking, hunting, fishing, gardnening, lots of outdoor things.
We (daughter and wife) do not want to be too far from shopping.
Thanks for your replies, we will be visiting again in a couple of weeks
