Washington County commissioners vote to increase their retirement benefits | TriCities.com
They have an a lot of nerve considering the cuts to our budget that have been made recently. Also, has anyone elses property tax SOARED in the past year???
I hope to find out which commissioners voted themselves this raise. I'll do my best to see they don't get reelected. Better yet, I would like to see the raise rescinded with the help of the voters.
What do you think about this?

I'd love to see that roll call. Although I assume most of the 'yeas' were from outgoing commissioners.

Thats a good point rccrain... I believe many if not most of the old commissioners either did not run again or were voted out, so an increase in their retirement would obviously appeal to them. I voted against every incumbent, just because of the red light camera issue. Given the issues that they had over the school budget, any commissioner that voted yes for this will also never get my vote again (if I can figure out who voted yes)

Unbelievable during these bad economic times!
Can you access the meeting minutes on-line? And, yes, I totally agree, that raise should be rescinded! Now *that* would be a good question for the JC Press to ask!

And JUST after the HUGE mess of school funding where we were facing cutting out almost all sports, new books and nurses in schools. This is just disgusting! Every day I contemplate selling and moving to Sullivan Co.

New update to this story on WJHL's website...apparently many of the newly elected commissioners are proposing getting rid of all benefits (salary, life insurance, medical insurance, and retirement.) I am strongly in favor of this, as I do not feel that commissioner should be a "job" but a service. If you want to give them a few hundred dollars per meeting, I wouldnt complain about that. But retirement and health care for being a commissioner, I dont think so.

That is excellent. The only one I endorsed (Joe Sheffield) was pushing for just that. He even promised to donate his salary ($4,500) to local charity and decline the $16k annual insurance.
