My husband and I will be moving to the area in a few weeks and have managed to locate a fairly charming apartment. However, I am concerned about the area. We literally know next to nothing about JC and have never even visited. We are moving out there to attend school and would like to have everything ready to go when we arrive. Anyone know anything about this area? or perhaps other areas that would be a better fit???
FYI: we have lived in memphis and san antonio previously. We are not leary of the city we actually love the hustle and bustle..just don't want to be surrounded by criminals or low lifes and...to feel fairly comfortable riding our bike around the area...any and all info. would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

Also..could anyone tell me what the average cost of utilities per square foot might be?? our apartment includes utilities but they have a cap at $75/mth for electric...the apartment is 1000 sq ft. thanks!!!

Which block of Unaka/Watauga are you looking at? Overall it's a safe area, but those roads are long, and have three housing projects on/near them, which may not be what you are looking for. You're still looking at a way lower crime rate in these areas than you would be looking at near housing projects in the cities that you are coming from.

The only part of that area I would consider less than desirable is the area around the Seniors Center (Myrtle & Stuart, Myrtle & New St.) back behind Watauga Avenue.

The apartments you mention on Roan and Unaka should be safe for you and hubby. The area is usually well lit and fairly heavily populated. The area around the Sr. Citizen's really is not that bad. As with anywhere, I would only say, know your area and keep a watchful eye. I've been in
JC for 20 years (this time) and feel comfortable going anywhere . As far as utilities, I am afraid you will probably be paying extra. Sorry about that!!!
