Hi Everyone!

I've been reading the Tennessee posts for several days now, and I've decided to jump in. My husband and I are leaving in a few weeks to visit Eastern Tennessee and to attend the wedding of my best friend's daughter in Kingsport and to look at the possibility of retiring there. My first question is this: we're driving from Illinois, through Kentucky, and my friend suggested that our first stop should be near Cumberland Pass. Does anyone have a suggestion for a hotel near there?

This will be our first trip in search of a beautiful, near-perfect place to live. We plan to look at the Tri-City area, plus Elizabethton, Gray, Rogersville, Jonesboro, Crossville and Cookeville if time permits. I would welcome any suggestions for hotels or "must see" sights along the way.

My husband is a digital photo addict, so I'll be sure to post a few pictures when we return.

Congratulations to mbmouse on the her new addition (Trixie), and thanks to her for all that she contributes to this website.

What is your exact route into TN? Your friend must be referring to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, which is a good ways off the interstate (I-75). You can get there from Corbin, KY via 25-E if you wish & stay in Middlesboro, KY, a small city of 30,000 or so which abuts the west side of the park.

As for sites to see in the Tri-Cities area, there are dozens of suggestions archived in this forum but some of the highlights I'd suggest are Bays Mountain Park & Warriors Path State Park (Kingsport), historic Jonesborough & Rogersville, the Rocky Mountain Living History Museum in Piney Flats, and the new new fossil museum in Gray. Be sure to set aside some time to leisurely explore some of the backroads of Greene, Hawkins, Sullivan and/or Washington counties. If y'all decide to go through Knoxville, don't miss the Museum of Appalachia in Norris. Hope you enjoy your visit!
