Hi to you all,

I am brand new at participating in this forum, but I have been reading and appreciating the vast amount of information I have obtained from it. I have pretty much focused on Greenville for a future move and will be making a trip there in the next 2-3 months. My question is regarding the drug and gang situation there. I don't mean to be dense, but my daughter is 9, and we currently live in a small desert town about 45 minutes from the border of Mexico. Drugs are a scourge here as are the gangs, and in conjunction with it we have a poor educational system and one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the nation. So I am not asking about the recent news item of a field of marijuana. I am talking about serious, drug sales and use, along with school gangs. Greenville seems to be all I am looking for in a safe, beautiful place to raise my daughter. I just want to make sure there are no secrets hidden under the carpet. I appreciate any input you can give.

I went to public schools in Greeneville from K-12. Never encountered any "gangs" what-so-ever. Drugs were never really an issue but I definitely knew people that smoked marijuana; it was still never forced on me. Overall it is a really safe town and the city schools (my experience) were safe and good.

The only place you usually hear about drugs is Davis Street and the Legion field area past the post office. Or, out in the country of them tearing down some marijuana plants.

Default Hello

I lived in Greene Co. for 5 years and have two children that were about your daughters age at the time. I agree with Appalacinangler, drugs and gangs are not a huge issue in Greene Co and it is easy to avoid. Unfortunately drugs in some form you will find in any town in this country. Here is the difference, I went to high school in south FL, there were drugs of every kind just about anywhere a teenager went, hard drugs such as acid, heroine, cocaine, ecstasy etc. not the same here in East TN. From what I saw (I managed government housing complex in the county so had to occasion to talk with the local sheriffs dept. on this very subject) it was more the county adults that had prescription pill addiction and marijuana. It did not seem popular with the kids as there is BIG push for kids to be involved in sports and extracurricular (community) activities. As they say, keep a kid busy, keeps them out of trouble.
There does seem to be a large amount of teen pregnancy in the county schools though, not so much in the city schools.
As for gangs, I did not see any at all, I still don't here in the Tri-Cities which is more populated than Greene Co. Sure there are "clicks" in the schools but what school doesn't have those?
I personally do not think you can compare a boarder town to a country town like Greeneville. Sure there are going to be issues, but not nearly the same.
Good luck with your move, sounds like you will really enjoy it.

There are no gangs in Greeneville that I can remember...rednecks yes....gangs no. Drugs are going to be an issue no matter where you go in this country, but unless you daughter runs with the wrong crowd I wouldnt be too concerned.
