Can a person get a P.O. box in Elizabethton or Johnson City without haveing a physical address in the area?
planning a fact finding visit in the next month or so but need
to be able to get mail while there...probably be staying for 3 weeks
or more, camping more than likely the whole time...
at least that's what we'd like to do, if feasible...any thoughts?

Yes. You will need to declare your physical address when you do so. In the past the post office wanted a piece of unopened mail from your physical address to confirm the address. I'm not sure if that's the case anymore. Check availability online to make sure the post office has a box. Don't assume the post offices have one waiting for you. I'm not sure why you need a P.O. box for only 3 weeks. You will have to rent it for 6 months or 1 year. It seems like a waste of money to me.

thanks for the help...
IF we're able to make the trip we will be gone for 3 weeks or MORE depending on what we
can find as far as living accomodations...I will need to have my mail forwarded to me so
I want a PO box for that purpose...Does the Post Office accept a campground as a
physical address for that purpose?

Just use your physical address in TX that's on your driver's license. It does't have to be local.

Every time we've had mail fowarded it would take at least an additional 3 weeks to get it. So if you're looking at being gone 3-4 weeks that could lead to a lot of mail being forwarded and then lost if you're no longer here to pick it up. Perhaps it would be simpler to have a family member or neighbor you trusted to check it?

But if you're certain you want a PO box here then I don't see any reason you couldn't get it. I'm pretty sure you can even sign up for it online.

Thanx guys for all the help...unfortunately, it doesn't look at all
promising that I will be heading that way til 2013,(if the world even is in
existence then)...All the money that was set aside for the trip has now
gone into getting the vehicle running right...so it may be some time before I can save up enough to go anywhere...what a bummer

For what it's worth....last year we were renting an apartment in Roan Mountain and temporarily rented a PO box in Hampton because that was most convenient for us. The Postmaster questioned why we didn't rent a box in Roan Mountain because he said it was cheaper there. Apparently the smaller the city the cheaper the PO Box rental rate.
