Hopefully some of you that actually live in the area can help me with this since I have never been there yet and am moving there at the end of the year.

How long does it take to drive from Johnson City area to the following places:

Tri-Cities Airport
Asheville, NC
Knoxville
Nashville
Roanoke, VA
Winston-Salem, NC

This is assuming at least the speed limit (or faster, advise with your times)and likely no stops on the way.

Thanks if anyone can contribute.

Kamoshika: JC to the Airport question. Is that going 26 to 81 or 26 to Bobby Hicks Hwy? I ask because I should be going to Northeast State this fall. Trying to find the best route.

My husband commuted from roughly downtown JC to Northeast for a semester. He took I-26 to Gray. Not sure how that'll work with all the road construction going on up there now on 75; it might be more favorable to look at other options. Still, it takes a considerable amount of time to loop around using I-81 and the Airport Parkway.

BP72, under most circumstances, it would be HWY 36 (N Roan) to HWY 75 (Bobby Hicks).

If you're coming from South JC, take I26 to Boones Creek Rd to 36 to 75.

To the OP, I've never made it to Nashville in less than 4.5 hours. To TRI Airport is now ~30 minutes because of heavy construction (50 mph highways are now 30 mph) and can vary based on time of day.

I drove from Kingsport to the Nashville airport earlier this month in right at 4 hours. Getting to downtown Nashville is another 8-10 minutes or so if the traffic's not bad. From JC it takes about 5 minutes more than from Kingsport, so I should've said 4 hrs. 15 min....but, of course, that depends on one's speed and traffic. I drive about 75 when the speed limit is 70, about 70 when it's 65.

Didn't realize the construction near the airport is such a mess...good to know.

That makes sense. BNA is on the eastern side of Nashville just off the interstate, I was thinking about Vandy, The Capitol, LP Field, etc ... plus I'm a pretty conservative driver. OK I'm a penny pincher and obsess about saving fuel.

Traffic from JC to the Airport still flows pretty good (except for the few random times they have to stop traffic ... "timmmmber"), but the reduced speed limits slows down the commute noticeably. I've seen local police and TN Troopers strictly enforcing the lower speeds, especially since that worker got killed on HWY 75. It's a pain to go 30, but it only delays the typical commute by a couple minutes.
