Hey everyone! My wife and I have been here about 3 months now (renting a place off of Cherokee) and are looking to buy a house. We have found a house near Science Hill that we are very interested in. The elementary school would be North Side. Looking online I can tell that it includes a mix of low income and high income families. Does anyone have experience or opinions on this school and whether you would send your kids there or not? I have no problem with diversity, I just want to make sure that the school can offer all the opportunities that other schools would. I also see from the school website that they are undergoing some program from the state to improve their test scores. Should this be a concern for the future? Thanks again!

Dear Langstaf:
In the words of a Bill Gatton commerical "Why would you not?". I live in Johnson City. North Side is a terrific school. More
diversified than most of the others, it has a terrific support system - Munsey memorial UMC. Although my children are grown, it I had been able too , I would have sent them there. All schools have their issues. North Side has always been a flagship school with new programs. I do not know the current Principal, but the former Principal, Vincent Dial brought the school into the 21st century. I have friends who children all went to North Side and loved it. My advice is to check it out. Spend a day - or half aday - eat lunch, talk to the parents who are picking up their children. Go to a PTA meeting. A side note: I went there as a child - many moons ago. Good luck - I don't think you will go wrong.

All I know is that my cousin works there as a teacher. She seems to love it (has been there for several years) and always talks about how the teachers are held in high esteem by the administration and are pushed to be their very best.

I went to both North Side and Fairmont when I was a child and there was a massive difference between them. I think things have changed quite a bit over the years and they all use similar methods of teaching now.

There is a website that grades schools based on certain criteria such as standardized test scores. North Side scored 4 out of 10.
