. . . and brewpubs with live music in Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina (anywhere from Knoxville in the "west" to Bristol, TN in the "north" to Asheville in the "east", to Townsend in the "south").

Last year we spent a week's vacation with a musical theme: Bluegrass. We toured the Crooked Road in Virginia (Galax, Fries, Independence, Abingdon, Rugby, Bristol, Clintwood). A family friend, who to this day is playing the guitar in a "geezer" folk-rock band, took his guitar along and was so lucky as to join the local folks in two bluegrass jam sessions. The most memorable one being the jam session in the courthouse in Independence, VA, two days before Christmas 2011 where amateur musicians from 13 years of age on up joined in the music (for the sheer love of bluegrass) over the most delicious Christmas cookies brought along by jam participants. Later on in the tour, we even got to meet Wayne Henderson, the famous luthier who built Eric Clapton's guitar.

Are there any venues -- and I mean the whole spectrum, from rowdy roadside honky-tonks to cozy, upscale brewpubs -- with good, up-and-coming local country music performers or other live music acts (and I don't mean the large music-dinner-theater-type venues they have down in Sevierville)? Is it possible to do a tour of eastern TN and western NC with a similar, Crooked Road musical theme and perhaps with the opportunity to join in and make music with the local folk (Bluegrass, country)? In the charming, small eastern TN and NC mountain towns, are there any other "hidden-gem" entertainment activities, only known to locals, for the daytime hours (museums, landmarks) and especially for the evening hours?

Thanks in advance to all you friendly people living in VA, TN, NC for your hot "insider" tips.

Pick up a copy of the "Loafer" in Tri-Cities, many of the clubs are listed there. The Loafer Magazine

Try the Rheatown Store in Greene County on Saturday nights. And the Red Barn on Sciota Road in Unicoi, not sure what days. There used to be also a great place out in Bowmantown, I think called Bowmantown Music Barn, on Collins Road - you can Google all of these. It's been about 3-4 years since I was at any of these so call and make sure if possible.

Also, the Down Home (downhome.com) in Johnson City is usually fun. For the daytime hours, you could look at the Archives of Appalachia at ETSU. Also, call their bluegrass program (they have a bluegrass major!) and see what they advise for activities.

We were at the Farmer's Daughter restaurant in Jonesborough recently and they had signs up saying they have local live bluegrass sometimes. May want to give them a call and ask ?

Definitely Chuckey, not Jonesborough. Sorry, not trying to tease you - I'm just from Chuckey and that's a sore spot among locals!!
