I'm leaning towards relocating to Gray (as long as the house doesn't have a freaky steep driveway). Just needed some general info...

Gray is between Kingsport and Johnson City, correct? Is it possible to drive to one or the other for work?

Housing a little pricier than Kingsport? Still pretty affordable? We would need to rent at first, I know it's a smaller area but I'm assuming there are rentals.

Are there any "iffy" areas in Gray that we may want to stay away from?

I love this forum, so informative.

I think mbmouse can field most of your questions on Gray. One thing I will say is that it is definitely possible to commute from Gray to JC or Kingsport very easily.

Default Hello

Hi, Angler was correct, I live in Gray and we really like it here. Yes, you can commute easily from Gray to just about any of the Tri-Cities areas for work, that, I believe is why it tends to be a bit pricey here verses Kingsport. My office is in Kingsport, on the west side of the Holston River and it takes me less than 20 minutes. DH works in Elizabethton and it takes him 30 minutes.
Yes, there are some house rentals, apartment and town house rentals available in Gray, not sure on the price but I see the signs. Seems to be a lot by owner so not sure if they are listed anywhere and by whom, but they are here.
I wouldn't say you would be "shunned" but you might get a few looks and comments from both camps about the Gator flag, but I think that goes for anywhere in TN, not just Gray ahhahahahaaha
As for house prices, it depends on your comfort range and what you are looking for? Here are a few examples of houses for sale right now in Gray from the national MLS listings on Realtor.com it should give you an idea at least.

This one is actually in my neighborhood, cheep listing price too! But you would have to be a good neighbor hahahhahha

OK, OK, so I got a little carried away LOL, I love looking at all the houses. Guess I should have been a Realtor hahahhha
But this will at least give you an idea. I believe all of these are in the Gray school district.
Hope that help, if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I am not the only one here on the forum that knows and likes the Gray area.

My office is in Gray and I actually live in South Johnson City. It takes me fifteen minutes to get to work usually. Gray is actually right now the best place to buy a home in my opinion. It has the highest appreciation rate currently at an average of about 7%. There are a few places to rent in Gray until you're ready to purchase. The best place to look for those are in the Johnson City Press (the newspaper).

Thanks for all the info... I love looking at houses too.... I'm just in awe to see nice homes for 75K - 150K...

You know what's funny.... I looked at the most expensive house on MB's list and I think it was 309K... I paid close to that for my house in Florida.... my house is 2300 square feet smaller, on a standard neighborhood lot, an no where near as nice

Your posts crack me up! "freaky" steep driveways and "shunned". Hahahahahahaha. Your descriptors are wonderful!

Well thank you. My cheerleaders (I coach pop warner cheerleading), give me weird looks a lot of times because of my wording. I'm infamous for making up words too. I'm glad to see someone likes my range of vocabulary. Speaking of cheerleading and football .... I know there's not a Pop Warner program in the area but is there youth football and cheer for kids? My son is 6 and right now plays flag and my daughter is 9 and she's been cheering since she was 5.

Move to Leesburg Estates in Telford and you can be my neighbor. My wife and I are diehard, bleed orange and blue Gators. My kids were happy to see us move before football season started because they got to inherit free tickets for this season. So, GO GATORS, and welcome to Tennessee. If you come up to Beef-O-Brady's this Saturday at 3:30, you will find us working on a big basket of wings and watching UF and Kentucky get down to business.

Yes there is community football, basketball, softball, baseball and I believe soccer. I know they have cheering in the schools but I am not sure about cheering outside of school, I will check. Oh, and important info for families with young kids. The Washington Co. schools do not have organized sports teems until the 7th grade, but there is community based sports for kids younger than 7th grade.
