Hello all! My wife and I may be moving to Johnson City or the surrounding area, for school on her part. We live in Chicago currently, and I drive a truck for the postal service as a contractor. I've had my CDL for 6-7 years now, have done the OTR thing, but that would be my absolute last resort. Been there, done that, so wondering what the market is like for local drivers in that area.

Or any jobs, really. I know I'm going to take a pay cut. (I make approximately 26.00 and hour right now)

Any info would be appreciated!

I'm not sure about the market for truck drivers, as I personally don't know any, but the job market in general here is very bad and the pay very low (this has been discussed in many threads), so I don't see why the trucking market would be notably better. The Tri-Cities is obviously much safer and cheaper than many parts of Chicago, but you also lose the amenities and vibrancy of such a large place. Why did you select the Tri-Cities? There are many smaller to midsize cities in the Midwest where you can make far more money than the Tri-Cities without making such a drastic, long move.

Unemployment rate is 6.3 in Johnson City according to the latest information and based on December 2012. For the same period, Chicago's is 9.8. Cost of housing, alone, will be very different but yes, you will probably receive much, much, much less in pay than you are use to. Also, bear in mind that there are going to be fewer jobs available, period.

OP said they are moving to the area due to his wife attending school.

Yeah, I figure I'll make less, and she still has to interview for the school (P.HD program), so we may not be coming there. Scarce job markets scare me, but a man's gotta do what his wife's gotta do, if you know what I mean.

Look into LandAir/ForwardAir, a pretty large trucking company based in Greeneville.
