Do people go to the river? Do they go in or just go fishing? Is it too hot to just spend an afternoon on your front porch or running around playing with kids? Tell me about your average summer Thanks.

Not specifically related to Church Hill, as I've never lived there, but Northeast TN during the summer, I would not recommend spending most of the day on your front porch. Some days are bearable, but most will not be. I would, however, most definitely recommend going to the river although I'm not sure how prevalent that is with other members of the community in CH. Hopefully someone else can help on that front!

P.S. It's also not very crunchy, but there are plenty of heady outdoor activities around

Thank you. Still helpful information. My husband mentioned that some places you cant really go to the river because it is not safe for various reasons, some places you just cant go in because the water is moving too fast, dangerous snakes, etc. I guess I just wanted to make sure that if I wont be able to sit out on my porch I can cool off in the river.

Churchhill has a pool. Water was cold in the middle of summer when we were there, though.
there is a nice little park right along the creek in Churchhill where you could walk. Also go to Laurel Run Park .It is a beautiful shaded park with trails up the Mountain, playground, pavilions, even porch swings. There are lots of camping and parks in the area. Bays Mountain has a great park with lots to do and see. Back Bone Rock closer to Virginia somewhere is also close enough for day-trip picnics and walks. Family lives in the area and we love visiting in the summer. Also be sure to check out all the Funfest activities in Kingsport. the park by Netherland Inn is also a great place to spend the day.

As a sidenote, Laurel Run Park was the site where most of the 1984 movie "The River," starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek was filmed. Just an interesting fact.

A brand new "made to look old" house and barn were built on the Laurel Run Park site, but someone torched it in the late 80s (?) I think. The park was created as a result of the movie being filmed there, for the most part.

It's a gorgeous park in that it is situated on the banks of the "very full" winding Holston River and flat, green lush farmland surrounds it with woods. Very closeby is the base of the Bays Mountain range. You can hike up to the top on a trail that is super reminiscent of the Smoky Mountains National Park.

It's a very cool, very nice park. Gorgeous area.

The tree that stood out in the movie was easy to recognize last time I was there, but I think my SIL said it is gone now. Haven't been there since the 1990s and didn't get a chance-too cold for me- to get there last week.

Smile Summer days

Hi, I lived in Church Hill for a short time and Iwould be out visiting withthe neighbors. Just loved it there. People are so friendly it makes me sad that I felt a need to leave. Although I am 1400 miles away now I still keep in touch with the many people I met during my short time in Church Hill. It has been a long time since I've been on this site. Is Mbmouse still around? She was a monitor. Church Hill is a wonderful place to live and make friends. Hope to someday visit again. Love to all, KLOSK.
