One of the ways I like to track the area is with services that rank states and regions for relocation. Kiplinger, which has been very favorable with its recommendation of Tenn. as a retirement destination, changed pace this year. Our low cost of living, housing cost and tax structure were trumped by high crime and poverty rates and higher than average medical costs. That doesn't mean this is not a good place to live, but the scales that others use to measure us for relocation have shifted. And yes, these data sets are used to vet areas for business and industrial relocation. The Tri-Cities has traditionally had a high violent crime rate despite the local sentiment that this is a low-crime area. At one point I did a study comparing the violent crime rate and domestic violence because I was told the reason the area had a high rate was domestic violence. The TBI, which I think is the best source, separates domestic violence from the overall crime rate.
