Using a monthly year-to-year comparison of job gains and losses as a trend tracking tactic shows the Tri-Cities job market began deteriorating in April 2012.

Johnson City saw a couple of months where there were job gains but there were the exception.

Bristol has seen a year-to-year decline in employment for 22 months. It has declined for 19 straight months in Johnson City. January’s employment was the first gain for Kingsport since April 2012.

Kingsport sees sharp employment increase in Jan., but not Bristol or Johnson City

I'm curious as to what drove the changes in Kingsport. This data point is a real outlier. AFAIK, there was nothing newsworthy that would cause such a large increase. There was little net change in employment when you take Kingsport's gain with the other area losses. Still, no net change is a lot better the continuing to hemorrhage jobs.

The answer to that question may show up with the BLS releases it Jan. survey of employers. That will show where jobs were lost and created. The unemployment report only shows who is employed not where the jobs are located. The first of the year puts the two surveys out of sync because they are based on the number of days not the calendar. The employer survey is also based on the MSA level only. Last year the Kingsport-Bristol MSA added 900 nonfarm jobs, while the Johnson City MSA averaged losing 33 non-farm jobs every month.
