I wonder if those statistics are skewed by the fact that poor people are likely to live in the city limits of Knoxville, and wealth tends to concentrate further out. Do you see more poverty in the rural areas near the tri cities? How do the statistics look when you compare the metro areas?

I don't think you see a true concentration of urban poverty here simply because the area isn't very big. There's no easy cutoff between the urban poor and suburban wealthy because there are no true suburbs in the Tri-Cities. Kingsport has Riverview, which is a poor, black neighborhood, but it also has a wealthy area on Watauga Street. Both are in the city proper. Likewise, there are affluent areas up on Chestnut Ridge, but less affluent areas that border the city out on the west side in Hawkins County. Both are out of the city proper.

By every definition of the term "suburb" that I've seen, Kingsport alone has at least four: Mount Carmel, Bloomingdale, Rock Springs & Colonial Heights.

Yes. While each of the Tri-Cities has several impoverished areas, poverty is more abundant in surrounding rural areas. That doesn't mean, of course, that there aren't many nice homes and subdivisions scattered around some unincorporated areas.

I think these are pretty good benchmark or suburbs in a general discussion.
Of course Mt. Carmel and Colonial Heights are technically separate jurisdictions from Kingsport and they have the highest median incomes in the area.
Colonial Heights has a median household income of $56,239 and is ranked by Tennessee hometownlocater as the 44th highest in Tennesse.
Mt. Carmel is $50,000 and is ranked 73rd in the state.
These numbers have not been updated to the 2009-2013 ACS survey.
