I was in Johnson City this past weekend visiting. I noticed some new developments that weren't there when I went to ETSU. I noticed Academy is coming to State of Franklin. Was there something else being built there, too?

Also, a large tract of land had been cleared near the Franklin Woods Hospital. It's on the same side of the street as the hospital. Anyone know whats happening there?

There is a lot going on; especially downtown. More is detailed in this thread I posted a week or so ago:

As far as development along State of Franklin, if you are talking about the large site cleared at the corner with Sunset, that is going to be a Food City along with several outparcels.

I believe the something else is a Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites. Yes, right beside the Marriott Courtyard.

The Academy sports was originally going to be down the road at the corner of Sunset as well, but after the original developer backed out they worked out a deal to open at Hamilton Place.

Johnson City's newest brewery brings hoot, holler to downtown | Johnson City Press

Yee-Haw Brewing Co. held a press conference today and officially launched their website, facebook page, and instagram/twitter accounts. The restoration is looking amazing and the brewing operation is going to be quite large. With the brewmaster recently heading one of the top 5 craft breweries in the country (Lagunitas) I believe Yee-Haw could become the premier brewer in the region and a cornerstone for Downtown Johnson City. I must admit, though, I despise the name.

And a great article about the developer and his involvement with the downtown renaissance.

Yee Haw is very exciting for Johnson City. Not my absolute pick for a name, either, but it has very special marketing power nationally -- and the creative forces behind this project have made BIG money from their distillation of spirits. I trust they know what they're doing. Yee Haw could be a really great employment driver for JC. I read somewhere that Old Smokey now employs 300 people?

I really think this has the potential to be along the lines of Highland Brewing in Asheville. Not just the first of many breweries but one that will be distributed to many states in the eastern US and putting Johnson City's name out there. There is huge economic development potential and as you mentioned, this guy knows what he's doing the alcoholic beverage industry.

Downtown Johnson City Progress Update - Video | Johnson City Press

A good article and accompanying video summarizing some of what has been going on in downtown JC the past few months. White Duck Taco Shop is an awesome addition to downtown, a new grocery recently opened, and there is active work taking place on several buildings with announcements soon to come.

The Trek store opened recently downtown and sold over 24 bikes their opening weekend (these are not cheap bikes either), Academy sports on State of Franklin just opened with the new Food City set to open later this summer/fall. Plans were announced awhile ago for a new hotel at Hamilton Place and land nearby was just rezoned to accommodate more retail and office development.

Finally, plans were just announced to restore the Model Mill to be utilized as a mixed use development housing the Chamber of Commerce, ETSU arts and bluegrass programs, and there is even talk of ETSU starting a brewing course to be housed at the mill. If this comes to fruition, it will be monumental for ETSU, Downtown JC, and the Walnut St. corridor.

Prospective buyer would restore old mill
