I really like living here but the current food stores simply are lacking. We need a Publix which is the best supermarket in the south and possibly the best in the east. We are in desperate need of Trader Joes's.
What does it take to bring these stores to this area?

Generally, two things are required to get a big box store: the company being on board with the area demographics/supply chain logistics, and a developer who is looking for tenants to come to a space they're building / has existing relationships with these companies.

I'd argue against the word need, especially desperate need, but if you want those stores, that's probably the most usual process.

Publix is opening stores in Greeneville and Bristol VA next year with the rest if the Tri-Cities to follow. Trader Joes maybe a ways off but asheville isn't too far to go.

Aldi, which is owned by Trader Joes sister firm, already has stores in Kingsport and Johnson City and the Bristol outlet is suppose to open this summer. Whether or not the company will decide to compete against itself is a question only the owner and answer. In many ways, the two stores are a lot alike. The German brothers who own the companies split the outlets - reportedly over a disagreement of whether or not to sell cigarettes. But thanks to two-buck chuck Trader Joes has the edge on public image.

Publix is expanding into northeastern Tennessee. Stores in Johnson City and Kingsport are possible. As Publix is expanding into Virginia, I would not be surprised to see it cross the state line into Kentucky in the near future.

There is a Publix Supermarket to be built in Bristol, Virginia sometime this year @ the exit 7 area across from Home Depot and Chic-fil-a, just down from the Sugar Hollow Wetlands area.

That Publix is projected to open in late 2017. It will be its first store in Virginia, and will be in the Atlanta Division.

I have not heard anything in regards to stores in Johnson City and Kingsport.

Are these places really so much better than Ingles, Kroger, Food City, Aldi, etc?

The Publix that I've been to seemed similar to Ingles.
