Now the new owners seem to be much better and more flexible with tenants so that may have changed now.

I expect Chick-Fil-A would want to build outside for visibility and drive-through business.

Having CFA and Mickey D's outside of the mall could be good for the mall, and generate some income from the unused areas of that enormous parking lot.

Chick-Fil-A outside of the mall makes sense, that I could see and they've have enough room for them and more since Sears is coming down. God knows Kingsport needs a second location as we only have one and it's a bit away and packed as hell all the time.

What about something like Drake's, then fold a bowling alley into the mall? What are folks' ideas on that? Warpath Lanes is pretty rundown now. I think a Drake's or Carolina Ale House concept with a true bowling option would work well in the mall.

Bowling isn't really that much in demand and I just don't see it working well. Drake's I could totally see.

When Frank Theatres was at the mall, they had a plan to build the extension into the parking lot which would have had a bowling alley, restaurant/bar, IMAX, and laser tag.

Older plans 8-10 years ago now are the ones that vacated the Belk Home Store for a food court and the whole wing to the left of it where Subway used to be.

Even more interesting was the plan to demolish JC Penny, rebuild it further out in the parking lot, and then connect the store with an outdoor shopping plaza. That JC Penny has wanted a remodel or new building for years now according to staff but the mall owners just kept giving false promises, now of course the whole chain is in financial trouble. This all makes me wonder what would have happened if the economy had not collapsed, what would have happened.

Unfortunately from what I understand the bowling alley and laser tag plan got axed for lack of interest/demand. JCP as a chain is struggling and no new stores are being built, some are even being closed as the company is downsizing. The company is saving money now and yes new stores aren't going to be built and not many remodels will be happening either. That being said the JCP store in Kingsport is in decent shape and actually does well on sales so it's not at risk of being shut down.

The JCP store has needed a renovation for years. That place was dark and dated twenty years ago. It is an eyesore and really a black eye on an otherwise quickly improving physical facility.

Demolishing/rebuilding it seems like a stretch. Those IMAX plans were too much "pie in the sky" for a fly by night theater operation in a small space.

JCP has had a minor remodel in the past year, including new and brighter lighting and some things have been fixed in the store. Appliances have
been added as well, so it's not a great but a decent store now.

Franks has one of their cinegrils (just like the one planned for Kingsport) in Blacksburg, VA near VT and it is super nice. So they definitely could have pulled it off 2 hours south as it is more than just a concept plan. I don't see the city as being totally innocent either. From what the newspaper has said, they can be difficult to work with for out of town investors such as Frank, Marquee, and the multiple mall owners

Demo of the old Sears is underway:

Kingsport Times-News: Demolition of Sears underway

Buried in the fine print, Zales Jewelry closed. Though that may be more Zales than the mall, as Zales is closing some stores as leases expire.
