Memphis probably has an overall poorer selection of grocers due to the overall lower income per capita of its region.

The Memphis metro area is 108th in the US, as measured by income per capita, at $20,327 annually (2010).

Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol is 206th in the US at $17,800 annually.
Respectfully, I don't think that logic works if you are going by demographics. By your own stats, the Tri-Cities have an actual lower income per capita than Memphis.

I'm from Greeneville, which I dearly love, and if they can have a Publix, then Memphis can have a Publix. There is a demographic reason why Memphis can have a Whole Foods, 2 Fresh Markets, a Trader Joe's, etc. Publix has decided, at this point, not to expand west of Nashville or Birmingham, not due to any demographics.

Memphis is home to FedEx, International Paper, and other major employers that would support major grocery stores over a typical wage worker from East TN. And I am saying that as a native East Tennessean that loves it. Southern Appalachia has a different economy, but the pay is much less than you would get in Memphis. I personally prefer and love the stores in Southern Appalachia, and miss them dearly! That being said, other stores are not being stonewalled because of "demographics."

Anyhow, I would say Ingles if you are just moving here and looking for a good regional grocery store!

Publix has a plethora of locations running down Western Alabama from the Shoals to Tuscaloosa to Mobile. All west of Bham.

Just nitpicking....

WJHL announced late Friday that demolition of the old Food City shopping center on State of Franklin/W. Market Street has begun, so Publix is officially on the way! They told me in an e-mail recently that completion is anticipated to be in the third quarter (That's July, August, September) of 2021.
