Hello,
We will be retiring soon and moving to east TN for the natural beauty and milder climate. We'd like to find either a house or empty lot in a subdivision with mature trees at a higher elevation. One to five acres would be nice for some peace and quiet. We're in our 50s and kinda boring, enjoy reading, music, birds, and hiking.

Are there any nice neighborhoods with large lots and mature trees at a higher elevation? After researching many threads on here, it sounds like Church Hill, Rogersville, Jonesborough, Piney Flats, and Elizabethton might be a good fit? We'll be visit in the near future and hope something will feel right for us.
Thanks for your help!

What do you consider "higher elevation"? Of the places you mentioned the highest elevation would probably be 1,700-1,800 ft. Until you get up around Roan Mountain or Mountain city you're not going to break the 2,000 ft barrier. You can find land in the region at higher elevations but it is going to be pretty remote, not in a subdivision, and possibly difficult to build on.

I'm not sure if you mean a general area at a higher elevation, or if you mean specifically a hillside area with nice views. If the latter then there is a n'hood in Bristol that is very woodsy and rural feeling, big lots, older homes that might fit. It's called Belle Book Estates https://goo.gl/maps/Q9cyiqtBRHR2

A couple options:

Wind Crest (Near Roan Mountain) Map and Directions to Windcrest Community in the Highlands of Roan

Red Tail Mountain (near Mountain City) RedTail Mountain Resort Community | Gated Community in Mountain City, TN

To stay closer to the Tri-Cities look for mountain property near Buffalo Mountain, Bays Mountain, or Unicoi.

By higher elevation, I meant up on a hillside with a nice view. A mountain view would be awesome, but nothing too remote. We'd like to be within 20-30 mins of dining/shopping. Thanks for your replies!

Yes, it is beautiful. Looks like we'll be doing a lot of driving around. Good thing we have a year or so to decide, and maybe will have to rent for awhile first. Thank you all so much, I'm looking forward to a change of scenery.
