Kmart #3147 is a discount department store located at 1805 East Stone Drive, Kingsport, Tennessee 37660-4605, the southeast quadrant of East Stone Drive and Indian Trail Drive in the City of Kingsport in Sullivan County, Tennessee.

Kmart #3147 may have started out as a Kmart discount department store as early as the 1970's. It appears to have expanded in the 1990's into a Super Kmart Center hypermarket. It reverted back to a Kmart in 2008 when the supermarket component and bakery, delicatessen, grocery, meat, and seafood departments closed.

Kmart's parent company, Sears Holdings, has been closing Kmart, Sears, and Sears Auto Center locations constantly in recent years. Signs a store could be closing would be the condensing of sales floor space and inventory, frequent liquidation sales, closing service departments, and the reduction in hours of operation. The condensing of sales floor space and inventory is obvious as Kmart #3147 reverted from a Super Kmart Center back to a Kmart. Kmart Pharmacy #3147's hours of operation appear to be reduced: closed Sunday, open 1000 hours to 1800 hours Monday through Friday, open 1000 hours to 1400 hours Saturday. The pharmacy's reduction of hours could be correlative with a decrease in business if the store's traffic and business have decreased.

I work beside K-Mart and my office overlooks its parking lot.

The space where the current K-Mart is used to hold a smaller K-Mart and a Kroger back in the 1990s. Kroger then moved across the street and up the hill. I think the old building was bulldozed and the current K-Mart was built. As you mentioned, the grocery store component has been closed for years. That section of the store is now cordoned off and the exit on that side is closed.

I don't see this store lasting much longer

Default Kmart #3147, 1805 East Stone Drive, Kingsport, Tennessee 37660-4605

Kroger was at 1805 East Stone Drive, Kingsport, Tennessee 37660-4605, through 1985. Its replacement store is Kroger #328, 1664 East Stone Drive, Kingsport, Tennessee 37660-4610.

I doubt Sears Holdings is done closing stores. Additional stores could be announced to close after the holiday season concludes.

Does Kmart #3147 have a lease expiring soon?

Publix is coming soon to Kingsport indeed. I heard Publix is in the process of finalizing a site to announce and open a store location. Could Publix open a store at the site of Kmart #3147?

No idea. There are six cars in the lot right now. Kingsport's K-Mart is the only one left in the Tri-Cities. Johnson City has the only remaining Sears.

The location would be great for Publix.

I do not know when specifically Kmart #3147 opened. If Kmart #3147 is approaching 40 or 45 years of operation, it could be nearing the end of a five-year extension.

Publix has opened new store locations on sites of former Kmart store locations.

Sullivan County, Tennessee property records show the original construction being 1974 (sounds right) and the real property is owned by Kmart Corporation. The square footage is 160,828 on 13.61 acres.
Specifically:
KMART CORP
DEPT 768 TAXB2-116A
PO BOX 927000
HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL 60179

My recollection is that the old Kroger structure on the northeast end was largely dismantled and enlarged to match the depth of the existing Kmart. There were only cosmetic changes to the interior and exterior of the original Kmart for the new "Big-K "look. Poor name association with a defunct chain store....

As Kmart Corporation owns Kmary #3147's site, it remains to be seen if it may sell the property.

The Big Kmart banner had no direction and was irrelevant. Big Kmart stores were hyped Kmart discount department stores that did not offer anything new. Kmart should have focused on Super Kmart Center rather than Big Kmart.

This could be an ideal spot for a Publix.
In addition to the prime Stone Drive location and prime grocery store addition to that area, the Overlook, a new luxury apartment complex, just opened this past spring behind KMart, so that would add appeal of locating there.

That KMart is massive but yeah, I'm very surprised the one in Kingsport has remained open longer than the one in Johnson City--which I think recently closed itself. This Kingsport location has looked dead/dying for at least 5 or 6 years now. The fact it has remained open for so long is puzzling.

If I were guessing, I would have clearly thought Sears Holdings would have closed the Kingsport KMart and kept the Sears mall store open longer....
