The bad news: AGC Flat Glass announced today that they would lay off 100 employees in Kingsport and another 250 at the Greenland Plant in Hawkins County:

This comes on the heels of last month's (temporary?) layoff at General Shale's Kingsport plant:
General Shale lays off 48 workers, idles Kingsport brick plant, blames weak construction market

The good news: Kingsport authorized $11.27 million in bonds yesterday to fund the construction of the 54,000-sq.-ft. Kingsport Center for Higher Education, scheduled to open in Aug. '09. The Regional Center for Health Professions is currently under construction and slated to open this August.

When these two buildings come online (and coupled with the Regional Center for Applied Technology), city officials estimate the Academic Village will amount to a $20 million local investment in higher education and bring 2,100 students to downtown Kingsport.

Great news regarding the higher education center! That's a move in the right direction for the future of Kingsport's workforce. They really have to diversify and strengthen the workforce--and move away from the manufacturing aspects of the workforce. This is good news. Sorry to hear about AFG though. My dad retired from there.
