I have read a lot of comments about both Hawkins and Cocke Counties on the forums; do these areas tend to have high incidences of drug use and drug-related crimes? (as compared to neighboring counties)...or just the opinion of a handful of folks I have encountered?

I have read a lot of craziness in the news--especially things in Hawkins County, but perhaps I only notice the stories because of the rumors I've heard.

Newport is the seat of Cocke County. The property and violent crime rate per capita in Newport is close to that of Memphis, which is a major city and nationally known for its high levels of crime. Newport has among the highest crime rates in Tennessee, which itself has high crime rates compared to most other states.

Rogersville is better off than Newport, but is still a bit worse than Tennessee averages. Hawkins County definitely has more than its fair share of notable crime in the local press.

Unless you have a specific reason to be there, there are better places to live.

The Town of Rogersville is nice enough but the rural areas are rough and some of the other localities in Hawkins Co have had corruption issues.

Unfortunately, I think the reputation is quite earned. If you are not born and raised there (including all of your ancestors) and enjoy the lifestyle there, there is not a good reason to be in either.
