Two speed cameras are approved for Bluff City's section of 11-E. A brilliant but shady move on their part because 90% of their tickets will go to Bristol/Johnson City residents. $90 a pop.

Have there been any other ticket cameras put up in JC? I got one of those when I was staying in Knoxville because I was stuck in the middle of an intersection on a left turn. It was only $50.

I'm not a red light runner, but I see a lot of people run them here.

$90? That's outrageous. Seriously, it is. There is absolutely NO reason for red light cameras in Bluff City. It's basically a high speed commuter freeway between Johnson City and Bristol with Bluff City (with, what, two businesses and 500 residents!?) stuck in the middle.

This obviously goes to show that these cameras are all about revenue, and not about public safety.

Bailey - not yet. There has been debate in JC over redlight cameras. I think a final reading is coming up soon. There are red light cameras in Jonesborough.

Jab - the article said "speed" cameras, which I assume is not the same as redlight cameras.

Oh! Whoops! haha, that'll teach me to read too fast. Ugh, greattttt, that's all we need. Hopefully they won't cause too much of a traffic backup mess.

They are $50 in Knoxville and $100 in Jonesborough.

If you are not happy with the speed light camera's then you can email the city of Bluff City and let them know how you feel. bluffcitycityof@aol.com

I personally don't care one way or the other. I just want to know the specifics on this camera system. How accurate is it? How far away can it read? Can I get reflective paint on my tag?

And HOW MUCH OVER THE LIMIT CAN I GO WITHOUT THE TICKET?

Each system can be set up specifically. Generally speaking they detect running reds, going 10 mph or over or some even will give you a ticket for being over the white line while stopped.

Back in the old days when you had to drive through Bluff City (there was no bypass) wasn't there billboards warning motorists that Bluff City was a speed trap? I also remember they had a traffic light that only had red and green on it (no yellow), and the police would manually switch the light directly from green to red to catch drivers running a red light. I used the live near dead man's curve in Bluff City years ago, and it seems this city has a bad reputation when it comes to traffic enforcement. I don't condone drivers running red lights. Here in Nashville, most drivers treat a red light as a "suggestion to stop". But, I do have a problem with an "automative system" tagging red light runners or speeders and sending out tickets in the mail. In Murfreesboro, TN, the ticket doesn't go on your driving record, as it is considered a non-moving violation, but if you don't pay up they turn the ticket over to a collection agency.

I was just thinking about this. That section of 11e has a 25k daily traffic count. If only one out of 10 cars violates the rules, BC gets over $20,000.00 each day.

2,500*$90= $22,500
