The type of home I bought here with the amount of land I have here would cost 700k in NY, where I'm from. (The property taxes here are great, however, thats not the only issue).

The area is pretty, however as someone posted elsewhere, "you can't eat the scenery"....

True. You "can't eat scenery". You are correct. If you come down [or up] here with a substantial amount of revenue/equity from your former life elsewhere to pay cash or a large percentage of cash for a home your income requirements will be minimal. Great for immigrants, retirement types, trust fund types, but not so good for people with limited means looking to start afresh. If you come here with enough money to put down on a home so that your mortgage payment will be very small and can get a nice piece of land you will have enough land to at least "eat a small amount of the scenery" if you're good at canning and have a nice chest freezer and root cellar. If you do not already have a fairly sizable amount of equity/wealth, don't move here with the dreams of building that. If you live a very simple lifestyle and live close to the land like an Amish farmer it may still be a place to consider. But yes. don't come here with any thoughts of "getting in" and making a good salary unless you know someone who can help you with that goal.

I am not a person with "limited means",however, all that does if you find the area to be lacking is give one extra equity for home improvement. This is an opinion forum and that's my opinion.

I absolutely love Johnson City and moved here in May. It's great for people of all ages. The scenery is great just about everywhere you go. Love having rural areas not far, even if to take a scenic drive. We haven't had much problem at all with mosquitos and find it easy enough to deal with without ruining a day or night. As far as 'knowing someone' to get ahead....if you have an education in certain fields, you can make VERY good money. There are many possibilities here.
