One reason a friend of mine is leaving, he is disgusted with small town mentality- he goes to a bar /restaurant in Elizabethton, and the service is terrible. He says he has had it with small town gossip and at least can enjoy diversity in Florida.

He has some cadence, here.

Tell him to just move to Jonesborough. The service is always good and the people couldn't be friendlier. Pizza delivery is a little slow, but I think they have trouble finding my house.

Sincerely,
A former Floridian

Here's hoping the door doesn't hit him in the *** on his way south. One less person in front of me at the gas lines.

Many places have customer service problems...what does that have to do with diversity?

(btw, if by "enjoy diversity" you mean you start every conversation with "do you speak english", then he can keep all the diversity down there thank you.)

Interesting subject.
I have noticed some places where I am just blown away at the lack of "customer service" as if the concept is not even there. However, one of the worst is Wal-Mart and well, what can you expect? I found if I am a customer in a place that pays very low wages I can expect to get what I pay for kwim? On the other hand I have been to a few restaurants in the Tri-Cities that I will not go back to just because there is no customer service and I feel like I am paying for it and not receiving it. Olive Garden on Roan will not get any more of my money for just that reason. Yes, I have been back several times, different servers and still bad. Which is sad as I really do like the food but uncaring wait staff and management...I'll go elsewhere thank you.
I put the blame on management of an establishment. If they don't teach and require staff members to know and practice customer service, it just won't happen.

"customer service" for the most part, has been lacking in our country for many, many years. I'm a firm believer if you run a business and provide great customer service, you will succeed.....

Customer service here is no better or no worse than anywhere else in the country. I agree with ljay, though, if he don't like it, don't let the door hit him on his way out! If you're going to let bad wait staff (who probably get paid $5.55 an hour) dictate your life direction, .....

Ya right! Customer service here in MN (and all of the upper midwest) is about 10,000% better than the most of the south. Our population is much more educated, paid better and actually care about their jobs.

That is an unfair statement.
First, you would have to have eaten in almost every place in the south to make that kind of comparison.
Secondly, education has nothing to do with the kind of customer service you recieve. Customer service is a "people oriented" job. And some people are really good at it, and others are not.
Third, just because someone makes less in a particular job, doesn't mean they care any less about their job than someone who makes a large salary. There are plenty of people who make an excellent income who don't care about their jobs.
You will find good and bad service no matter where you live. What is so difficult about not returning to an establisment if you don't care for the service? Just don't go back!
You can not judge an entire area, or part of the country, because you got bad service at one, or even a few, establishments. Just go somewhere else....

Well you answered it yourself, TimtheGuy. If you're paying your staff better wages, that means you get better people. Those better people are going to do a better job.

Really simple, eh?

Bones, I was going to say the same exact thing, you just beat me to it and I tried to rep you but am having rep problems again lately.
Bad customer service isn't just a regional thing... great customer service is a dieing(sp?) art form in this country.
