The new recreation area on Boone Lake (Minga Rd) opened in May, replacing the old one while the dam's being repaired. Nice swimming beach, volleyball net, picnic tables w/ grills and lots of parking. 10/6 & 10/30:

This friendly Australian cattle dog met me in the parking lot at Hampton Creek Cove in Roan Mountain. He stuck with me the entire time I hiked the cove, bringing me sticks to throw for him. The apple trees in the upper field were loaded so I filled up a t-shirt w/ about 10 lbs or so. 10/9:

Thank you, jab! Here are a few more from the past week...

Views from Kingsport's Rotherwood Bridge:

This RR bridge next to Big Elm Rd crosses the Holston River in Kingsport. Built in 1908, it's about 220' long & 65' high and it mostly serves Eastman with coal from Eastern Kentucky. When I was about 14 or 15 years old, two friends and I thought it would be really cool to walk across this bridge northbound just to say we'd done it. We were almost halfway across when we noticed the fast-moving northbound train rounding the curve about 1/2 mile behind us. Reminiscent of the scene from the "Stand by Me" movie, we hoofed it across the bridge with the horn blaring & our hollering the whole way, jumping off the end of the bridge to safety with just 2-3 seconds to spare.

Just past the bridge and also along Big Elm Rd is this incredible sycamore tree (near one of the caves of the 5 Caves quarry):

Kamoshika,

I always enjoy your photos. Tennessee is such a beautiful place. I'll be retiring in Tennessee possibly next year and I can't wait. Glad you weren't hit on that bridge by that fast moving train.

Kamoshika, I am in love with East TN.

Im currently stuck in Western NY looking to relocate to a more free state. I've been randomly looking around at a few places and came across this thread. East TN is awesome. I can't wait to learn more about it. I already have very favorable views of TN and Tennesseans and this is awesome. I'm totally interested in the eastern part of the state now.

Thank you.
