Just wanted to say hi to everyone. We are from the Maryland area and are looking to relocate to Tennessee. I was born and raised in Maryland and though I will miss it I am tired of paying the high prices and also our crime rate just keeps going up. My son is in a VA Hospital here in Maryland and I am looking for a home that would be close to the VA Hospital near Johnson City. I would appreciate any information anyone can give me on Johnson City and any areas close to the VA Hospital. We hope to visit sometime this fall to get acquanted with the area. I know from a recent trip to Pigeon Forge the people seem much warmer than here on the East Coast.

Diane

In order to be more helpful, what kind of information are you looking for; what are your needs and wants? (price range, rural vs urban, acceptable distance to VA, etc.)

Here are some things the forum has recently found interesting about Johnson City:

And if you can give us some more to go on I'm sure we can offer suggestions on neighborhoods, taxes, crime, ...

How close do you want? A five minute drive or 15?

Coincidentally, I live close enough to walk to the VA in about five minutes. Much of the immediate housing around the VA campus is very run-down and a portion of it on the 800 block of Lamont is also somewhat dangerous. In general I would avoid anything from Lamont spanning to Market on the north and West Watauga on the west. The area around the John Sevier apartments (W Watauga) is a hub for seedy-looking individuals. My dad has been propositioned by a ... lady ... (haha) while stopped at the stop light there.

But housing toward ETSU is much better, Highland Avenue especially stands out as a "rose among the thorns."

This is all housing in the immediate Mountain Home vicinity. The good thing about Johnson City is that you can conceivably live in Jonesborough and still get to the VA in 15 or 20 minutes.

I moved to this area from NY 10 months ago. (has it really been that long?!?) We moved for the same reason, taxes were killing us, prices were skyrocketing, crime rates on the rise. We absolutely fell in love with Tennessee 3 years ago and knew this is where we wanted to be. I'm a native NY'r and I thought I would have a hard time adjusting. Nope, not at all!

We live in a little place called Church Hill and we're about 45 minutes from the VA. That's where my husband gets his medical care. There are all kinds of wonderful places that you can check out that I'm sure you'll find something to meet your needs.

I also have to tell you that this is one of the nicer VA's. The one in Albany, NY was a mess. This one is clean, efficient, and wonderful.

The people here in this area have all been warm, welcoming and we couldn't have asked for better. I was a bit afraid after some on the forums here told me that "outsiders" can be treated badly but we'll be here a year in November and we've had just the opposite experience.

I hope that you're able to find what you're looking for. This is a beautiful place to live and at times can be absolutely breathtaking no matter where you go.

Laurie
