I currently in the Phoenix, Arizona area, and have been more or less unemployed since Nov, '08. I've had temp jobs, and some side work going on, but nothing major. I moved here three years ago from Detroit for the better job opportunities, and frankly, I'm not a huge fan of this area. If I don't have steady work, I don't feel the overwhelming need to stick around, lol.

A couple friends of mine from Norfolk are planning on moving up to JC in 2-3 months, and I'm seriously considering following them. I'm absolutely sick of the heat here in the summer (I'm even jealous of the 40s and 50s you guys are having now), and I really miss seeing rain and snow occasionally.

My most recent experience has been in computer network and telecom cabling, primarily commercial. I also have computer support experience, warehousing, auto mechanics (although I don't have the tools/equipment to jump right into being a general mech anymore), bicycle mechanics, general manufacturing/factory rat type stuff. I'm not dead set on getting any particular job, just hoping to get...something.. when I get there until I secure more permanent employment.

Here in Phoenix, I've even gone as far as to apply for the night stocking type jobs at the local grocery stores, and even fast food stuff...and I'm just not finding squat (although I suspect that has a lot to do with being way overqualified). I know it's bad everywhere right now, but it at least appears that the Tri-Cities area has lower unemployment rates than Phoenix, and given that it's considered the best area to start a new small business sounds awfully promising to me as well.

So really, in short, whats the employment situation like out there now?

single, no kids, lower cost of living, country atmosphere, cooler

I think the job market is picking up a bit. But nationally there are still 6 persons competing for each job out there. I get a list of job openings from ETSU's career development, I'll DM you the last one I received so you can better judge the semi-current, local job market for yourself.

I would keep an eye on Johnson City, Knoxville, and Oak Ridge. They are all really nice areas. The employment situation isn't good anywhere right now. I would be hesitant about moving anywhere right now, unless you already have a job lined up.

I have to agree with you...it's great to move here; this is a nice environment to live in, but the employment is slim pickings. We have moved quite a bit in the last 5 years and the job market is just as tight here as it is anywhere.

Certainly don't regret the move though!
