Johnson City's Buffalo Mountain Park (http://www.johnsoncitytn.org/index.php?page=531 - broken link) is surrounded by CNF and has 15+ miles of trails. But to access CNF's extensive system of trails and get a real wilderness experience, you'll need to head for nearby communities like Unicoi, Erwin, Flag Pond, and Hampton and venture out from there.

Local to Johnson City the Buffalo Mountain Park is said to have a wonderful trail system. Also nearby cities Kingsport (Bays Mountain Park) and Bristol (Steel Creek Park) have large municipal mountain parks with literally miles of trails.

Some of the most beautiful hiking, however, is found in the northeast tip of the state in Johnson County and the adjacent counties of NC and VA where the elevation rises from around 2000 ft to over 5000 ft and the forests are filled with old railroad grades from 1900 lumber industry. You might find the local trail club website of interest. Johnson County Trails Association - About the JCTA

In Kingsport, the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club is open to non-employee members and is most active. Their site: TEHCC - Hiking (http://www.tehcc.org/hiking.htm - broken link)
