I'll second or third the Bradford Pears, there should be some sort of ordinance. I unfortunately had my windows down when I ran the gauntlet of about 30 bradford's to get to Walmart. I think they smell like BO, but they must be cheap, cause everyone seems to have them.

Guess I'm in the minority because I think they smell great.

I drove down University Parkway yesterday in JC and it's lined with them. I didn't smell a thing... maybe I missed the 'smelly' stage?

And no,its not a dead fish hidden somewhere in my car(R.I.P. Grumpy Old Men)...my neighbors have commented on it as well,as well as friends who live on the far end of Stone Dr.

Is that the name (Eastman and Domtar) of the paper mills up there?

Domtar is, I believe. Eastman is a big producer of chemicals, fibers and plastics.

I was wondering if the smell could be the two paper mills? They do smell like rotten eggs (could be fish) IMO.

I cast my vote for the Bradford pears too. I pass a string of them on the way to work and I sometimes catch a whiff of something that reminds me of fish oil vitamins.

There is only one paper mill. It did produce considerable odor (hydrogen sulfide probably) from the early (1920's) paper machines up until probably a couple of decades ago, maybe longer, when the newer machines replaced the original. The plant was built and long owned by Mead. Mead sold to Willamette, then Willamette was acquired by Weyerhaeuser, and then Weyerhaeuser spun off that business as Domtar (fine papers, I think). They have been good corporate citizens here. I don't now, or have I ever, worked there by the way.

Fishy huh? Bradford Pears do stink but fish isn't the smell I get from them. Still, they're sickly smelling to me. They bloom nicely but they're also so prone to frost damage and they split up and crash down so much in the winter I don't know why we plant them so prolifically.

In Baltimore they plant a lot of gingko trees along the city streets. Cool ancient tree with a unique leaf but when their fruits get smashed under foot on the sidewalk...YUCK!!!! Smells like cat vomit.
