The American Chestnut was once the most dominant tree in the Appalachian Forrest. In less than one generation, it had all but become extinct due to blight from China. Now with the help of advanced environmental science, the American Chestnut might be able to make a comeback.

People may have forgotten how important the chestnut tree was to the Appalachian Mountains. Before the blight was introduced to North America in 1904, the chestnut tree was a vital part of the entire eastern ecosystem. The tree was late to bloom, its flowers unaffected by seasonal frosts. It was a food source for a variety of wildlife from bears to birds. More importantly, the tree played a large role in the economy of the community. People depended on the annual nut harvest as a cash crop for livestock feed. The lumber was easy to work and rot-resistant, making it a good choice for fence posts, railroad ties, barn beams, homes and even musical instruments.

On Friday, April 16, the Southwest Virginia Restoration Branch of TACF will host a Chestnut Restoration Celebration to recognize the progressive work at the four research farms and to educate local residents about the mission of the foundation. The Southwest Virginia Restoration Branch consists of approximately 15 community members from Lebanon to Bristol who focus on promoting the foundation on a local level. Big M Farm Services and Alpha Natural Resources will sponsor the event.
