They particularly wanted calm weather, cultural events and a central location to leave for camping trips. “Jim didn’t want to be bothered by hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes,” said Judy, 72, a retired employee of a county social services department.
For Jim, 79, a retired life insurance agent, “It was the best decision we could have made.”...

I don't believe this part:

"The temperature in Tennessee averages 83 in the summer..."

Saw this on KNS earlier. I checked another source and found that Paris (near Jackson), Crossville/Fairfield Glade and Chattanooga made the top 100 listing for retirees.

Maryville was bumped off the list.

I think the average is taken from an average of both high and low daily temps, thus the 83, but that is a bit deceiving.

Paris, Tn. is really, really surprizing to me.

Agreed. When looking at its growth rate, Paris isn't really growing that fast so I don't know who all these retirees are who are supposedly flocking there. Same with Crossville whose growth rate has slowed substantially in the last couple of years and now has a glut of homes for sale, among the worst in the state for unsold real estate.

West Tennessee in general isn't the most scenic area, nor does Paris have any real attractions to my knowledge. Susceptible also to severe weather. Guess Paris is the "retirement flavor of the month," so to speak.

Well, Paris is one of the nine communities that the state is pushing in its Retire Tennessee program. It's near Land Between the Lakes and has a couple of nice golf courses, but yeah otherwise it's kind of in the middle of nowhere and doesn't have many creature comforts. I guess for those retirees who want nothing more than a quiet small town with a Wal-Mart, Paris fits the bill.

The nine communities on the state's list of good retirement communities:

West Tennessee
Paris
Savannah

Middle Tennessee
Cookeville
Crossville
Fayetteville
Springfield

East Tennessee
Chattanooga
Dandridge/Jefferson City
Greeneville
Kingsport
Loudon

The state got their wires crossed just a bit since Crossville is actually in East Tennessee.
