Hey All

I'm a single 27 year old male and I'm planning a trip down to the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area for a weekend in late June or July (probably not the Fourth.) I've never visited and have never really been intrigued by the area until recently, when I drove through Knoxville on my way back from Florida. The area was beautiful.

I'll be driving down from Michigan for 2-3 nights. I just got out of a relationship and I'll be traveling alone. Just something that I really need to do - spend a weekend by myself and for myself. I'm looking for a fun place to stay - near nightlife, restaurants, shops, activities etc. Somewhere where I might find a party/nightlife crowd. I understand that I'm not going on Spring Break, but I want to have fun - this is definitely something I am really looking forward to.

Where should I stay? Where should I go?

Help!

Thanks for the advice in advance!

Well, I guess you need to know that Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge aren't party central for single guys. They're very family-friendly areas that cater to people with kids. Pigeon Forge doesn't even allow the sale of liquor in its restaurants. You might want to refocus the purpose of your trip to just enjoying the gorgeous East Tennessee countryside.

You can always come into Knoxville for some nightlife, but of course you don't want to drink and drive, and it's a 30-45 minute drive or so from Knoxville to PF/Gatlinburg.

Default Yours is an

interesting question and I'm eager to see other responses.

Personally, I think between the two choices Gatlinburg would be a better fit for you. Pigeon Forge is definitely targeted/marketed toward families with children and, as far as I know, there is virtually no "night life" - at least by my definition. Shopping at the outlet malls (two technically in Sevierville) is really great and you can find some really good "deals" on nearly everything. Now, if you like country music theaters and/or dinner theaters, then you might enjoy Pigeon Forge. Unless they just very recently passed the liquor-by-the drink law within the last month or so, you will only be able to order beer or wine in Pigeon Forge. Pigeon Forge attractions are more like tourist traps to me, but if you like amusement parks and/or go carts, you'll find plenty to entertain yourself.

Gatlinburg is more geared toward adults. It has a very walkable downtown. Unless you're seeking solitude in the woods or a romantic getaway cabin, I belive it is infinitely preferable to stay in a motel close-in. I don't know what places - if any - might offer live music and/or dancing, but the likelihood is greater for that in Gatlinburg. There are dozens of small specialty shops along the parkway for shopping, but no "real" shopping if you're looking for clothing, shoes, home decor, although there are lots of unique items in all categories. You could plan a day trip to Cade's Cove or through the mountains. In fact, you might greatly enjoy a trip across the mountains to visit Cherokee and a visit to the casino there. Absolutely gorgeous scenery on that drive.

Both places offer really nice restaurants. The Apple Barn at the north end of Pigeon Forge has GREAT food, nice shopping, and a winery. I believe there's a Calhoun's in both places, and The Peddler in Gatlinburg is excellent. One of my favorites was The Greenbriar, which had/has great atmosphere and food - although I haven't been there in many years.

The closest movie theater is in Sevierville - unless the rumor to build one in Pigeon Forge actually came to fruition.

Be sure to find and visit the online sites for both cities before you decide which date/weekend you'll visit and it's a good idea to go ahead and make your reservation in advance. There are often conventions and/or other activities that will bring an additional overload to the already crowded weekend traffic - which is nearly certain to be extremely heavy.

I hope you have a wonderful visit in our area - be sure to come back and share your experience with us - have fun

I would never recommend a Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg vacation to a 27-year-old looking for nightlife. Not in a million years. Yes, Gatlinburg has cocktails but if you find a place with a bit of music it is going to be the much older and very married crowd. Really, it a place for families looking for the tourist trap experience. Gatlinburg is definitely the cuter of the two towns, since it's nestled in the mountains and you can walk around, but even the shops run toward the tacky side.

If you are intrigued by our area I would tell you to come on down to Knoxville. Stay in downtown. We have a small but rather bustling downtown, with The Tennessee Theater, The Bijou Theater and a newly restored movie theater. There are great live music venues there and you will definitely find a younger crowd.

From that spot you can venture over to Gatlinburg or other places. If you like hiking there is wonderful places up in The Smokys or The Cumberlands.

Bear in mind that I am a mother in her late 40s, so I'm not some young punk telling you won't care for PF/Gatlinburg.

Totally agree with hiknapster. My son likes the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge experience. He's 8. There's really just not much there for a 27-year old single guy unless you're really into go-karts or a gazillion attractions with the word "Ripley's" attached to them. There's not really a scene in the area. I've been there four times (!) this year.

To the person who posted about movie theaters -- Yes, there is a nice, new small multiplex in Pigeon Forge. I've been a couple of times. Small but comfy auditoriums. Very friendly people. Much cleaner and nicer than that thing that passes for a theater in Sevierville.

Single, 27-year old guy...Head east to Asheville. There's a great, young, creative community there. Definitely more of a scene.

27 year old single guy will not be happy in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge looking for a fun evening.
I would classify just about all the restaurants in that area as airport food. Cost to value ratio is out of whack, and really just blah (outside of a couple higher priced places, but still.....).

Stay in Knoxville and spend time downtown on Gay Street, Market Square, and The Old City. They are all in the same general area and easy walking distance. You will find night life better suited for a 27 year old single guy. You can also venture down "the Strip" toward campus for more college age places (not that far to walk from Gay Street and Market Square either).

When you want to go into the mountains, take a day trip to Gatlinburg.

Have any of you recently been downtown, lately? To the farmer's market? Market Square? The Old City?

No need to go to Asheville. They are going to eventually revitalize the strip, but for now it is for the younger crowd - to a degree - on a budget.

The Old City will have what you are looking for, as well as this place: thevalarium.com (http://thevalarium.com/ValariumWebApp/ - broken link)

Default Ok...

the responses are exactly why I thought it was an interesting question. I TOTALLY agree that Gatlinburg and/or Pigeon Forge is not any place I would recommend for a 27 year-old single fellow looking for nightlife. I just was chicken to be the first to say so

OP, wherever you end up, hope you have a great time

Thanks for everyone's replies!!!

After much deliberation, I've decided against taking a trip to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. I'm really thankful for Citydata!

Anyways, here's my next question:

Knoxville or Nashville??
