Keep in mind that this is summer vacation, so most UT students are gone. And with the drinking age here at 21 (ahem) there aren't very many bars on the strip near campus (Cumberland Ave) although there are a gazillion restaurants on the strip, many of which do serve alcohol. Oh, and yes, the campus is urban.

You might want to check out the Old City which is on the NE corner of downtown, the Jackson @ Central intersection. That part of town doesn't really cater to college students so I imagine it's still pretty active.

But, to be honest, I don't know of any bars around here that play bluegrass. Maybe someone else can chime in, but I don't get the impression that bluegrass is very popular among UT students. But I could easily be wrong.

My crowd is late 20's and we frequent the Rocky Hill area with Roosters and Tin Roof, if you want to get away from the urbnaness of Market Square and the Old City.
Spots downtown that I know some of my crowd attend are the Brewery, Carleo's, NV (just opened couple weeks ago), and Crown and Goose.
Not sure about bluegrass, but most of these have live music, just have to troll the nets for which nights...

Oh I wasn't aiming my (ahem) at you. We can usually tell when school is back in session when we see scores of underaged people (often UT athletes) arrested for drinking on the Strip. One bar, in particular, seems to change owners fairly regularly as they keep getting ticketed for serving alcohol to miners.

Actually, there is bluegrass in some bars and venues around town.

I'd start here.

The old city is your best bet on the weekends. On the weeknights I like preservation pub on market square and downtown grill on gay street. Sunspot on the ut strip is a nice place with a good beer selection and acoustic music on fridays

If you want to branch out check out Maryville. Pick up the Metro Pulse paper magazine and see what all is happening around the entire area.
