I'm hoping to get some help in this forum since I didn't get an answer in the western nc forum about NC. My husband is retiring after almost 30 years of service in law enforcement. He loves the outdoors...hunt/fish. We are what is called pre retirement since we have 8 year old twins that will be attending intermediate school by the time we decide to move and we are thinking of working part time on top of his pension. NC is going to tax our pension, TN won't and I'm sure re taxes are going to be much less than what we pay now which is $10,000/year....no it is not a typo..

Our ideal place....mountains! On less than 3 acres, log home less than 2,500 sq ft (price range...low $400's) not too far from convenience stores/hospitals/sport programs for kids, and schools are very important! Preferably public but can consider private. Where is a good area? I heard Maryville is very good. We would like to stay in the east TN/NC border. Can anyone recommend a log home builder or realtor? We are thinking of visiting areas this October.

Thank you all!

Maruville/Blount County is exactly what you would be looking for. Norris, TN is a good pick too. You can do a lot with 400k around those areas

Need some further clarification.

Do you want to be in the mountains or just close to?

What is your definition of "not to far" drive time or mile wise?

What do you look for in shopping (Walmart or mid/upscale)?

There are endless possibilities. You have to visit and see the various areas to see what "floats your boat".

I'll cast a vote for West Knoxville. I pretty much knew it from the start but I still spent a LOT of time just driving around.

You can use this site: Find Homes By Area to search for properties. A quick search using your criteria there are 3 listings in Maryville/southern Blount county (closer to mountains)

Thank you both! either close or on mountains and close to places like Lowes/Home Depot, groceries. I don't want to drive more than 1/2 hour.

You will be surprised how "out in the country" a 1/2 hour drive from major shopping is around here.
