Having a generator dosen' t hurt either. I had one for 6 years before I needed one. We plan on relocating to TN next year, having recently bought a house in Tellico. While still on Long Island, Irene came up the coast and ripped into us. A massive tree went down taking all wires with it. Uncovered the generator, put oil & gas in it and let 'er rip. We had power for the refridge/Freezer, our 52" flat screen and a few lights as needed. I supplied our elderly neigbors with a line for their Refridge/Freezer too. It's a 5550 watt. We even had our perked coffee maker in the morning. You never need one until you need one. Same goes for a shelter. When the Tornado siren goes off, it's not the time to think about building some kind of shelter. We positively plan on getting a shelter in our basement in the house in TN. Again I say, you never need one until you need one. It's just good insurance.

I just want to point out that Knoxville does NOT have tornado sirens.

you can build your own safe room for very little money
frame in a walk-in closet sized room in the corner of the basement
make the studs just far enough apart to accommodate a concrete block
the ones that are roughly 8" x 16" x 3"
Sheath the inside with plywood
fill the stud cavity's with concrete blocks
Sheath the outside with plywood
use a solid steel exterior door
this system has been tested and withstands a 2x4 fired from an air cannon simulating 150 mph winds.

I've read that the Tellico Village planning board are looking to install sirens to warn of tornados approaching. That's where we're relocating to soon. Hopefully they will actually do it.

Thanks 'Trigger' for the info. I have a great location in my basement that could work for me. I can use that info.
