would like to stay under $100,000. What areas should I look in, and do they have good schools?

You already got input on west knox and fountain city so just select those areas and further search criteria. You'll get an idea of what's on the market. However it is no substitute for a good agent and an "on the ground" search.

Good luck. We're transplants who are not sorry for one second about retireing to Knoxville.

I just inspected a nice house off Western Avenue and McKamey today. It was a little over $100K, but not much.
Get a good agent to help you look.

Default not yet

We are not moving for a year or so. I just am looking for the best place. Any where is good as long as its not a slum or "in" the city. I would like to have at least 1/2 an acre, and good schools. I get along with everybody. Thats why I love Knoxville. Seems like yall are all like me.

Good luck in your search and several web sites will allow you to search and once you find 1/2 lots, you will usually need to spend a little tlc and few dollars to make it up to speed, unless you find one that has been bought and redone! The kaarmls.com site has a public search, so good luck.

My son is buying a house in Knoxville and it has been difficult to find a house in this price range that is in good shape. Your post is encouraging.

Nobody is allowed to buy anything until after we visit and find ours! Seriously though, it looks as there are several properties in the price range as that's where we're looking. Most (at least on the listings) look ok to good, may need some TLC but that's fine (with us).
A lot depends on how big a house you want and there may be some trade offs but finding the 100% "perfect" place is usually not possible, not even if you build it yourself unless you've got unlimited funds (take it from someone who's been there done that).
Lots of nice looking rather large newer mobile homes for sale many on larger property if that'd work for you.
There are some properties that need work but for someone who's familiar with remodeling and such they "could" be a great deal. We found one that looked fantastic, almost everything we're looking for and from the pics looked to be in decent shape with a great price. Sent a request for more info and found out the foundation is failing in several places and the house would have to be jacked up and the foundation blocks replaced. It was not known if it was even worth doing.
So I'd say to anyone, be careful and do your homework, I'd hate for anyone on here to be stuck with a money pit (remember the movie?).
