Our 20 year old son broke his neck in a fall in April and is now in rehab in Atlanta learning to survive as a quadraplegic. He will complete his rehab in December and does not have a home to return to and does not want to stay in Atlanta. We, his parents, are looking for a "wheelchair/severely handicapped friendly" city within a days drive from Atlanta to relocate him to start a new life. Ideally, we want to find an accessible 1 BR 1 BA apartment in a "compact neighborhood", close to a few basic necessity stores, shopping at a "social security disability income" level of rent. Although he is not a college student, we thought a "college town" might be a good place for him to be - more folks his age, etc. We are considering Knoxville, TN. Any comments or guidance? Specific leads to suitable communities in the Knoxville area are most appreciated. Is there a "wheelchair group" or organization in Knoxville? Or, is this a "pipe dream"? Thanks.

jasco - first of all let me extend my sincere sorrow regarding your sons accident and paralysis. I do not know the answer to your question but wanted to write to you to suggest phoning the case/social workers at Patricia Neal Rehab here in Knoxville. I would think that they could speak well to your questions. Best of luck to you and your son.
