I recently visited Knoxville to see if it is an area that I'd like to move to. Right now I am planning to move there in the summer of 2014, after I graduate.

I've been looking at neighborhoods... I focused most of my attention on North Knoxville and Parkridge. I loved all of the old houses.

However, I've been reading now a little about South Knoxville. Apparently they are redeveloping the riverfront area? I am particularly interested in the trails and greenways in South Knoxville. I think it would be great to be able to leave your front door and be able to walk or ride your bike to trails.

Can anyone tell me about the trails in South Knoxville (biking and walking/hiking) as well as the riverfront redevelopment plans?

Are there nice restaurants and businesses in South Knoxville? Is it sort of gritty or industrial?

Thanks.

Look up Knoxville Urban wilderness for trail descriptions. It is impressive.

South Knoxville is not known for its shopping and restaurants though there are a few independant restaurants worth noting: King Tut's, Frussie's deli, Bayou Bay, I heart NY pizza, the Round-Up, Huesca Taqueria near disc exchange come to mind. There are a couple of Chinese restaurants and a branch of Cancun.

The best thing is the proximity to downtown. You have all those restaurant options practically at your doorstep.

Plus, all of the shopping there as well!

A Georgia developer has announced plans to buy the old, vacant Baptist Hospital (bought by St. Mary's and now Tennova) but they have not said what they want to do with the property. South Knoxville has enormous potential but for now, it is mostly gritty.

I was so excited to read about this, too. I can't wait to see what the plans are. I hope it's something good.

Yep, I was hoping that was going to be the big announcement, this morning. Nice to see that the south waterfront area will finally not look like an eyesore.

I'm excited about the Suttree Landing Park development as well, with the arboretum, riverwalk and festival lawn.

And the pedestrian and bike bridge!

Before I moved here, eight years ago, I believed this would eventually happen.

Here's a link to more high quality renderings of the Baptist site.

Hik, I am also excited about those plans.

This all ties in well with the Cumberland Ave project...

City of Knoxville - Cumberland Avenue Project

As well as the new University Commons...

University Commons - Knoxville, TN

Downtown will benefit, and continue to grow, with residents from across the bridge in the new project, in addition to those living in new spaces being developed in the downtown neighborhood:

They've been working on the strip project for awhile. I would love to see it move ahead. We had someone on CD who visited Knoxville but only visited Cumberland Ave. I guess she thought that was "downtown." I wanted to cringe.

University Commons is beautiful, coming along nicely.

Honestly, I didn't know about Marble Alley. It looks great and makes sense.

I wish there was something between Mast General and the Visitor Center, something to get people walking down toward the Old City.

Does anyone know much about the Lakemoor Hills area? The houses seem to have large lots and are convenient to Downtown.
