B Spider, so you mean the scrolling live posts, right? Is that where we can watch for one on real estate? Thanks.

I was referring to this part of the forum.

//www.city-data.com/forum/real-estate/

It isn't specific to Knoxville, but it can answer general real estate question such as mineral rights, buyer's agents questions, closing procedures, etc.

Got it. I was hoping it was specific to an area, but it's good for general browsing for topics of interest. Thx.

Just posted on another Knoxville thread, so if you see this again, sorry! We're now considering Gatlinburg or Chattanooga in addition to Knoxville as a potential place to buy a home. All the info I'm seeing on Knoxville and Maryville sounds like it would be a good fit for us, I wonder if the other 2 towns would be just as good as far as ... vibrant downtown, great mountain views, nice hiking, safe area. Any input is appreciated!

Vibrant downtown: Gatlinburg (maybe too vibrant) > Knoxville, Chattanooga > Maryville.

Mountain Views: Gatlinburg > Maryville > Knoxville, Chattanooga. Knoxville has great long range views, Chattanooga has shorter mountains right in town.

Crime: Maryville > Knoxville > Chattanooga. No idea about Gatlinburg.

Hiking: Gatlinburg > Knoxville > Chattanooga, Maryville. This ranking is subjective, depends how you rank greenways, in-town trails, mountain trails: high elevation vs low elevation.

Thanks Creeksitter. So you're saying crime is highest in Maryville (not safety), I'm assuming. Good to know since we're still thinking about Maryville so we can be closer to the mountains. Are there areas we should avoid in Maryville because of crime, and areas that are safest around there?

No, I should have said safety is better in Maryville. Thanks for catching that. But really, where you live and who your neighbors are is most important. I wouldn't rule any of the cities out because of crime. If you live in an upscale area get a monitored burglar alarm.

BTW if you don't want to be overrun with tourists why is Gatlinburg even on your list???

I didn't know the tourism aspect of Gatlinburg until someone else told me today. Not for us!!!
