Metro Pulse: Local Knoxville, Tennessee things to do, movies, music, dining, nightlife, entertainment and tourist activities.

This should give you a few ideas.

Exactly, Dave!

More specifically:

Most venues are concentrated in the Old City, on Gay Street, Market Square and on the Cumberland Strip.

That's hilarious! Many years ago it wasn't very safe but that changed. (Not that it was horrific. It's never been a Detroit or even rivaling most bad areas.) I was just in the Old City last week with my 13 year old. I walk through all the time. By the way, I'm an older lady that is out of shape and I have nothing to fear, even at night.

At one time there were not that many stores and venues that were open, now the place is teeming with businesses. The next street over, north Gay, use to have only a few places, too, but that is no longer the case, either.

I love Trip Advisor for vacations but it is not very accurate in giving information about areas that people live and work in. I know because it was one of the very few resources available when I moved to Knoxville in 2005. City-Data got its start after I had already moved!

Anyway, I strongly urge you to go check it out. There are a couple of great restaurants down there, too. I love Shuck on North Gay and The Crown and Goose has a great atmosphere. For something very different, visit Boyd's *** and Reel. One of my favorite stores in the city is there, too, although if you are a dude I doubt this will interest you!

There are a lot of live music and dance clubs down there. And if you feel adventurous you can drive past the homeless - I say this tongue-in-cheek, it will be fine - and over to Sassy Ann's in Fourth and Gill. It's more of a disco/techno place but it is uniquely in one of the fine neighborhood Victorians!
