Hi we live in central Florida and wondering if we need to leave the state for better job opportunities? Hubby was laid off in April and hasn't really had any luck. He is in IT industry. We are kinda familiar with the area as we have family in Greeneville and that is ultimately where we would like to retire. TIA

Better job opportunities....not sure....

I would not move anywhere unless I had a firm job offer...

Try something like....

Thanks! I have other reasons for wanting to get out of Florida. I feel like Tennessee is home to me and really tired of a lot of things down here.

The job market here seems decent, but I guess it's a field by field basis. I'm not too familiar with IT honestly. I hope you find something!

Thanks! It has only been 3 months since hubby has been laid off but it just seems like the jobs around here aren't good.

I know you said you want to be fairly close to Greeneville. But since getting a job is priority, and if Tennessee is where you want to live, you might want to also consider Nashville. Nashville has a huge shortage of IT workers, so much that the city created a web site to try to bring more IT workers to the area:

WorkIT Nashville | Find Tech Jobs in Middle Tennessee

At any given time, there are 800-1000 openings for IT workers in Nashville.

It may be too far from Greeneville, but you might want to check it out anyway. You'll certainly be closer than if you stayed in FL.

The Knoxville IT market is dominated by staffing agencies. These firms specialize in mostly short duration W-2 contract work and often provide no benefits of any kind. Go look at dice.com, a popular IT job board, and order the search by employer. You'll see what I mean.

I was laid off from a contract IT position in the Tri-Cities on July 1 and our agency was run out of Knoxville. I told the agency representative that I wasn't interested in no benefit contract work and he emailed back saying he had nothing full time in Knoxville or Nashville. This was from the largest such staffing firm in the industry.

While there are jobs available, I *highly* doubt you will want to move for a three to six month gig, as that seems to be the norm. You will have no PTO, no vacation, no retirement plan, or any other benefit by working through one of these agencies. I have seen very, very few full time IT positions of any kind anywhere in TN except Nashville.

There are other cities in the South that have healthier IT markets - Atlanta, Columbia, Raleigh, even Charleston. Knoxville is a poor choice for IT.

It's often difficult to gauge whether there are real IT worker shortages or whether firms are just lobbying for more cheaper, imported H-1B workers. This is something you will encounter nationwide.

DVC70FLA, realize that some people may have a difficult time in the employment process but not all people are the same. Your mileage may vary.

Thank you all for the information. Certainly didn't think about Nashville as I was thinking more eastern TN but am open to all different areas.

I'm probably echoing others, but Greeneville's job market, and really most of East TN, is not a good place for IT. It is mostly retail & service oriented. Best of luck, though. It is a beautiful area.
