My wife and I are middle-aged and are considering a move to Knoxville. I have conducted some research and am spooked by the "upsurge" in the amount of crime as reported by police department statistics, etc. Reading through some of the forum posts in the past, it seems like there is more crime than recent years with much of it going unreported.

We are both planning to start grad school next year and I looking for a good safe place where we can work, play and attend school. When we previously lived in Murfreesboro, we used to vacation in Gatlinburg and loved visiting the area. Of course visiting the area and living there are two different things.

Just looking for an honest opinion and consences to ease our minds.

There has been a recent rise in crime in the campus area for the past few months. My car has been broken into twice, and I know several people who were assaulted. Be smart in what you do, you will be fine.

Knoxville's crime statistics can be deceiving. The KPD uses a seperate reporting system involving crimes- they report EVERYTHING.

Therefore, it looks alot worse than it really is. I have lived in Knoxville all my life, and have NEVER felt threatened or unsafe- anywhere in town.

tntornadox,

Do other Police Departments not report all crime? How do the numbers differ here? Why don't they just change the way they report it so it will look like everything is fine? I'm sorry but I don't understand. Thanks

Let's say someone breaks into your house, steals a knife out of your kitchen and then slits your throat. In Knoxville, that's reported as three separate crimes. Other places report it as one crime, others as two crimes.

I agree with tntornadox, I feel very, very safe in Knoxville. All of Knoxville. I can't say the same for Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta, Chattanooga, or even Jackson.

There seem to be little to no random acts of violence in Knoxville, people shooting people just for the heck of it or for a couple of dollars. Knoxville is a magnet for homeless people, a lot migrate here from other areas, so you get some smash and grab type crimes.
And you get some violent crimes because people do have guns here. But usually when someone is shooting at you, you know who they are and why they're shooting. It's not like Washington, D.C. or other cities where you'd hear random gunfire at night or you had a chance of getting shot as part of a gang initiation or a drive-by shooting or just because someone felt like killing someone that day.
I've always felt very safe here. There's an amazing absence of graffiti and cars with the radio blasting.

A lot of the crime in Knoxville happens over lobster dinners, cruises and the like. You need not worry for your personal safety; unless the nausea from reading about it overcomes you.

Or over cellphone conversations. No worries. The records will be conveniently lost.

I think most of the violence occurs at County Commission meetings!

Me? I have a commissioner named "Lumpy" that represents me.
