Hello there! I have been reading through some threads and am overwhelmed by just how helpful everyone seems. I haven't even scratched the surface in terms of the threads so I will cut to the chase: it is the all too familiar story about relocating (for job) - friends have suggested Powell as good place to live. Help! I have never been to TN let alone Powell. I must live in or near Knoxville (as per job requirement). Please be open and honest with the suggestions. Our sole requirement is a bit of running room for our best 4-legged friend.
Many thanks to you all!

Default Do a "Search

Hi, pabam and welcome to the forum!

I will soon be a TN resident myself so I understand your feeling of urgency to find a great "hometown".

Not living in E. TN yet I had to do a quick search on Powell just now. If you go to the "Search" option at the top of this page and type in "Powell, TN" and click on the circle for "posts" you will find many good comments about Powell from the locals.

I am sure that by tomorrow there will be many forum regulars who will give you lots of information on the Powell area. Meanwhile, do some searching and see what you find!

I hope you find a happy home in the area. Keep us informed of your progress.

I live in Powell. It's fine. It's just a suburb of Knoxville. Lots of subdivisions. Decent schools. New Library. Low crime.

I wouldn't go out of my way to move there. Nothing about it stands out. But I wouldn't tell anyone to avoid it, either.

Our friends, who we visited every year in TN causing us to fall in love with the area, lived in Powell.

It's a nice area; like Hik said there's nothing spectacular about it to make people flock there, but no reason to avoid it either.

It's actually the sort of area we were seeking (we wound up in Kingston), because we were looking for an area that's not in disrepair, but not one that's in the midst of a "boom" either!

good luck!

Default powell questions?

Hello everyone. I too, would like to move to Powell. I found out about Powell when I lived in San Diego. I googled sermons online fundamental and I've been listening to Pastor Clarence Sexton from Temple Baptist ever since (4 years now) I grew up in San Diego and lived there until 2 years ago. My husband's job brought us to Las Vegas, and if you knew me very well, you'd know I don't belong here. I won't go into how obviously wicked it is here and I have never and will never go to the strip for anything whatsover. Just what I've heard is disgusting and grevious to my soul; also very sad.

My husband works for Costco and we moved to the far most north part of the city. So, we really don't feel the effects of this place. We rarely drive more than 5 miles and just stay up on this side of the city. It's rather boring here and because I won't go into a casino, there is nothing for children to do here outside of some of the attractions at the casinos. They put bowling alleys, imax movies, zoos, aquariums, kid's rides, all in the casinos. But I will not be manipulated by their tactics and allow my three sons to be part of that. Anyway, I'm hoping Costco will open in knoxville in a few years and my husband has such a good work ethic and since he is one of the best managers there maybe we can move there. My question is, Is Powell a nice godly place to live? Here, even in the north part, women dress or should I say undress just to go shopping. Plastic surgery is very common, to say it nicely. I just want my sons to live where nice godly women abound, is that too much to ask? I want to take them to the zoo without going into a casino, etc. What is the spiritual temperature there? Is it all like Temple Baptist Church, which seems like a glimpse of heaven to me.

The good things about Las vegas is nothing, weather wise, happens here. It's not too cold here in the winter. It's hot in summer, but summer nights are nice and no humidity. No bugs or mice or fleas. We do have black widow spiders and crickets, though. No Fires. No Tornadoes. No Hurricanes. No Earthquakes, and No Rain, which is sad. Could someone please comment on weather the roads get icy and how cold does it get in winter below 30 degrees. How bad are the mosquitos in summer. thanks so much for your replies.

Thanks for the search techniques, I will take your advice.
We are coming from a suburb of Phila, PA. The idea of living in a place that is not overly attractive to others is more than wonderful! Our area has more than tripled in number of residents in the past 10 years as it is very attractive to potential buyers. What used to be the farm we played on as kids is now a sea of 400+ homes.
Lots of neighborhoods? Do you mean like the Stephen King ones I look at everyday: 4000 + sq ft home on 1/3 of an acre, or less?
Again, I appreciate your input.
I am bound by a 20-25 mile radius to Knoxville, do you have other suggestions about places? I'd love to research your suggestions.

Smile Hope you find what you are looking for. Powell may be it!

Pabam, may I ask what suburb in Philly you are living in? It sounds like it may be the Newtown area. I, too, am a PA native and taught for many years in that area. My hubby and family and some of my family are still in Bucks Co.

I know that even up around Royersford and Pottstown it is becoming a McMansion Mecca. Too bad.

You will find that this is a common irritation to Tennessee natives, as well. And, we know through our own experiences just how emotionally draining it can be to watch your beloved home fill up with more and more outsiders. Many bring the same problems that you wish to escape. Just so you are aware that the mega-everything mentality seems to infiltrate just about everywhere in the country.

We all should be mindful of this and expect to become a part of the native landscape and not try to make E. TN into something it is not. The good folks born and bred here deserve better.

I hope you find what you are looking for in a new home. TN has so much to offer - good, friendly people, beautiful landscape and mts., wonderful parks and year round events - something for everyone.

gemthorton- we are in Chester Co (West Chester) and urban sprawl is upon us!
What you say TN has to offer is just what we are looking for. The job relo is actually quite a blessing.
Any suggestions about places to call home with the beautiful landscapes and mts you mentioned? I need to stay within a 20-25 mile radius of knox

Oh, I know Chester Co. well! It's too bad that it's becoming so congested. But, it seems to be happening everywhere. People are living longer and babies keep being born. Too many people for all of these great areas!

We are in the process of trying to relocate from N. Georgia now ourselves. Going east of Knoxville will give you mountain views, but so will going up around Oak Ridge and many other spots.

Most of them are well within a 20 mile radius of Knoxville. You might want to do a google earth search and a forum search with "mountain views, Knoxville" as you search query.

AND, there are so many great sources of information from the forum members who now live in and around Knoxville that will be able to stir you toward the areas that you are looking for. I am still stumbling in the dark myself.

As I was reading your post I had a thought...maybe your husband can do some "work for costco" digging and find out for you and all of us about Costco coming to Knoxville next year. We can put that thread to rest maybe
